Pro tip? For primary care appointments schedule for as early in the day as possible.

If you even see a doctor.
For my GP visits, I'm not sure you need a medical degree to do what she does. Pretty sure a nurse could handle everything since my doctor is terrified to write prescriptions and sends anything beyond a cold to a specialist.
The oncology professional I see the most is a NP. I like her far better than the Doctor, who travels once a month from Seattle. He's another that has to reinvent the wheel every time.

If it's just a checkup and I've waited longer than 30 minutes, I leave. Done it twice at my doctor's and on my rescheduled appointment I haven't had to wait two minutes.

So the ones who show up have to pay for it with their time wasted?

Medicaid pays transportation and hotel costs for patients that live in villages. The number of no shows is unbelievable.
Many hotels stopped taking their vouchers for this reason.
#1 reason I left Alaska.
Healthcare was just freaking god awful. All you get up their for PCPs are shitty doctors and nurses trying to pay off college loans
Plus, they were horribly racists (something I don't throw out lightly or often).
When my wife (half-native) was pregnant, the difference in care she received while I was at an appointment with her v. while she was at an appointment by herself (or with her brother) was night and day. When I wasn't there, they talked to her like she was an idiot and didn't care about anything she had to say about her healthcare (she is very engaged in her own healthcare because of many other autoimmune issues she has).
Seriously frick the Alaska healthcare system.

Why don’t these folks schedule more reasonably
Because a-hole patients no show at an alarming rate which causes huge holes in the schedule and wasted time.
Maybe they should incentivize showing up and disincentivize no shows instead of scheduling an unreasonable amount of appointments. It's not ALL doctors but it is a large percentage that schedule poorly. I am keeping my current doctor as long as I can because they see you at your appointment time 90% of the time. That is worth a lot IMO.

It is pathetic. I've been down to Seattle as well, and found it to be just as shitty though, particularly Harborview.
That place is a nightmare.

That’s not my experience. Maybe it’s where you live.

Gov involvement w health care is a bummer

Direct Primary Care. $100/month. No charge for visits, discounted medication, labs and imaging. NEVER wait at appointments. Usually the only patient even there. Dr. spends up to 90 minutes with you. Most routine issues are handled via secure text or video so you don't even have to go to the office most of the time. Sasser Direct Primary Care is a practice in Baton Rouge.

Honestly, this is a gigantic problem. Doctors are the least business savy "smart people" around. We get absolutely zero training on how to run a business. When I finished medical school, I had no idea what a balance sheet or P&L statement was. I didn't even understand how doctors got paid. It's almost essential to have a good business person running a medical practice for it to really flourish.
This pretty much sums up why most doctors offices are inefficient. At least you recognize it when most don’t.
I run a business so I don’t try to prescribe people medicine, a lot of doctors out there think they can do both.

The management is far simpler for dentists (not to diminish what they do).
For the dentist, you go in, they look at one area of the body, take pictures or don’t take pictures, clean teeth, and discharge.
It’s a tad bit more complicated for doctors in primary care, especially with everyone being so fricking unhealthy nowadays.
Fair enough, but most of these explanations seem to resolve to 1) canceled appointments and 2) varying appointment lengths. Guess who else has this problem? Restaurants. Yet you rarely wait as long for a reserved table as you do for a scheduled doctor appointment.

This is why I show up late to every doctors appointment. Never have to wait.

I actually feel bad for (most) docs. Today unless they’re business savvy, many don’t make the money you think they do. They overbook because many of them are looking for every billable scrap they can to pay off their debt
Not saying it’s not a bitch to wait

Telemedicine is freaking awesome. I had an appointment yesterday from my office.

insurance companies have cut down on payout as well, so they are having to pick up more
