I don’t know but if the next gift that you’re given is a bag of dicks it would appropriate.

You need to google the price to determine the value and check it against your employer's gift policy to ensure you are not suppose to report the gift to your management.
Not following the policy is a good way to eventually get fired over something stupid and preventable.

Not trashy to see how much something is worth... but admitting to it in public is.
It's like checking your wife's bra size while dating. You'd like to know but it's a delicate thing to possess. Kind of like being in charge of your office's payroll or checking to see who got the best gift.
It's a catch-22: because it's dangerous to not consider the ramifications, of living with what you really didn't want to know, but yet it's human nature to want to know.

Why would you Google it? Every one of those gifts I can eyeball for an estimate.

Trashy and unethical to google the price. Fact.
What ethics rule?
There is a legitimate reason for doing what the OP does. Depending on the size and type of gift, one may be required to report it as income.
Outside of that, it is still trashy, but does a trashy tree make noise when no one is there to hear it fall?

You should value it so you can pay the appropriate gift taxes I am sure you remit

This is the correct answer. You have to avoid even the appearance of impropriety. Some things can get you in hot water with the government too.

One company I worked for didn't allow you to receive or take a gift from a vendor valued over $50*.
That might be a reason?
*I believe the logic was it had to be taxed if the value was over $50
**but it was nothing for us to spend $25K for a hunting or fishing trip for one of our customers

I was told the Golden rule of business gift acceptance years ago and it still holds true.
If you can't eat it, drink it, smoke it or frick it don't accept it.

Its unusual, but if given a nice gift I suppose it's human nature to be curious on the cost. Maybe a tad odd but not the craziest thing.

Oh, nevermind. This is shite and you're wrong.

You can eyeball an unknown bottle of wine? It could be 2 buck chuck or well over $100.00
