As a teenager? At 16, I worked for half a summer on a crew building a custom home for a family friend and made $800. My parents paid the rest of $2900 for a '79 Z-28 with leaking T-Tops and rusted pin holes in the floor behind the drivers seats that I eventually drilled out to allow water to drain every time it rained.

Right after college as an adult? A new '89 Civic with a 5 year note for $10K

I felt like I failed as an adult at that time. And still do.

Want to say I paid $15k for my dodge dakota.

Payments were $288 a month and I swore I'd never pay more than that for a vehicle and my last vehicle I financed for $600 a month. The dakota was a manual, no electric doors, bare bones truck. Had a tape deck that I replaced with a CD player with a remote control because lord knows it was too far to reach in a single cab vehicle to turn the radio down. I rolled the bed liner in it myself. Was a fun truck.

I've never had a new vehicle.

I just remember because it was so damn high because of the interest rate.

I think standard auto loans with good credit were 14-15%

I always bought used until a 2002 Tahoe. $36k 0% APR for 60 months. Swore I'd never pay $36k for a car again. Guess what?

I was wrong.

My first car was a 1970 Ford Maverick, paid $950 for it in 1978.

Basically this car right down to the color.

I'm just thinking about this and I have never bought a new car for myself, I did buy a demo Mitsubishi Mirage and an S10 pickup that was used by the service manager. The Mirage was the first I bought, I can't recall what I paid, somewhere between 6K and 8k. I think it was a 1991 model but my old brain does not remember.

In 1984, I went with my Dad to buy that Z-28 from a used car lot next to Don Carter Lanes on Airline. The owner of the lot offered $500 down and 2% financing. A month. My Dad said thanks, but he had cash. My portion was in $10s and $20s.

you always hear folks say that they don't make cars like they used to. seems like all the stories my dad/uncles tell about their cars involve rusted out floors, leaking roof, and ripped seats at 10 years. Were cars really better back in the day or is it boomer reminiscing/nostalgia?
