I saved all mine up and took the whole month of November off in 2024. Had a bachelor party in Denver the first week then fiance and I went to Spain for 16 days for the remainder. It was awesome. Highly recommend if you can do it. If you have the time they shouldn’t be able to say shite

My Dad worked for the railroad and that was pretty standard vacation time (he took two weeks in the summer, a week at Christmas, and let a week of time rollover). They were considered essential workers.

Same with the IT fiancé. When he starts to hit his PTO cap (it rolls over into short term and long term disability pools at that point) his supervisor shoots him a message to let him know he's getting close and to go on and take a day or two. We'll take two weeks for our honeymoon early next year without issue.

Some of y'all have some really miserable work/life balance.

They work in O&G and other subsidiaries off of that plus lots of construction folks as well.

Makes sense.

Wouldn't want to live in that lifestyle.

I know with my job currently, everybody takes at least two weeks off at some point of the year (mostly at the end of the year) but nobody gives you shite if you take 4 weeks off

Time to get over this attitude. Do you think that the company you work for will actually think more of you for not using your PTO as you so choose?

Everyone is expendable in a modern workplace and if they needed to, they would cut you loose without a second thought.

You'll regret great experiences you passed on, you won't regret not spending more time in the office. Go live your life.

Take this advice with the knowledge that I'm a GenXer that has recently hit their "frick all this" phase of life.

i work for a refinery. they literally give you 5% bonus if you take 2 weeks off at one time. literally put it in place to make high level management take their vacation

The ot is full of 95 iq individuals that think they know everything and 85k a year means they are the smartest guy in the room.

The first week they figure out how much they miss your work.

The second week, they figure out how to do the job without you...

+1

Talking about how you never take PTO as if it's a badge of honor just tells everyone how dumb you are. If you work for a place that encourages that, you have a shitty job. Like I said, you'd never brag about how you willingly decline part of your salary or tell your company to not worry about their portion of a 401k match. Why would you be proud of not taking PTO that you've earned? Just dumb.

I have never taken 2 consecutive weeks off. I think the longest was a trip we took where we left in the middle of the week and got back the following week. I worked Monday and Tuesday, flew out Tuesday night, and was gone for 7 days. Flew back the following Wednesday night, and worked Thursday and Friday. So I only used 6 days off, but was off for 8 days. That seemed to work much better than taking an entire week off. We typically only take one full week a year, and spread the rest around long weekends and holidays.

What kind of question is this? If you have it, it's yours to use as you see fit. Everyone needs to recharge.

Go on the fricking vacation. No one ever said "I wish I'd worked more" on their deathbed. And I'm someone who doesn't use enough of their PTO.

I take advantage of every perk my company offers.

For example, my company will buy me new boots every year. Do I need new boots every year? Absolutely not. I'm mostly office based.

But I absolutely buy new boots every year. I have a nice collection of brand new boots in my closet that will last me the rest of my life

But there are plenty of guys that I work with that don't take advantage of this.
"I don't need new boots" Who cares! You might need some one day.

I really don’t understand what it’s like having a job. Always worrying about how much vacation time and PTO you have, bitching about health insurance, needing to ask permission to go somewhere and take your family on vacation. And most people with jobs are always trying to figure out ways to work less and get out of work. Looking forward to retirement and counting the years, and if you have enough in your 401k, etc… It’s just foreign to me. I’ve done my own thing for about 25 years. If I want to go, I just go. But I enjoy what I do and it’s fun, so I don’t really ever retiring,..or worrying about my PTO.

So basically you have no contribution to the conversation.

100%

I have a stupid call tomorrow with our health services 3rd party....do i need them to give me advice on what or how to eat...hell no, but if you do the 30 min call they send you a new scale and kitchen scale and a couple other things, so of course I am going to do it.

I am the same as you on boots. Have a collection of brand new ones

same thing with the bonus i was talking about. Company put that in place to literally get VPs to take vacation.

but the average OTer....they could never take 2 weeks, their company could not survive

Who said I'm angry. You're asking if it's okay to take vacation time with your wife. You need to reset your fricking priorities
