Inside sales margins 35%
(cigs, beer, liq, dispensed drinks, prepared foods are higher).
Fuel 3%
Lottery 5%
ETA: all depends on sales mix. One location in the ghetto can be a gold mine and another on an interstate can break even.

Also, why are so many foreign owned?
A friend of mine used to actually have his own business and part of it was being hired by convenience stores/gas stations and I asked him why did so many Muslims or people from India own all the gas stations. If I recall, I think he said it was a good family business. And its bought as a family.. Or under the family's name (opposed to the father buying and running it) and then the kids or other family members run it.
I think their money is managed as a family. All the money they all make is "family money". Its one big pot. When the parents pass away, none of their finances are split between the kids, its already "in the pot". I don't know if its all of them who do this, but it makes sense. I think there are people in parts of Asian (besides India & middle east countries) who do this as well.

You make money when gas prices are falling. The gas is bought on credit, so the credit card company gets about 10-20 cents worth of the gas “cut”. Holding prices just a few more days when the wholesale price drops is where you make the money. After that, the profit comes from it’s any kind of “food service”, then it’s all the rest of the crap that’s in there. A few of them have check cashing inside which is almost all pure profit.

But idk that they really make much off the actual gas. Mostly off the “convenience” part of it being a convenience store.
I refuse to buy anything other than the extremely rare occasion soft drink from there. Nothing they have is needed that badly for me to pay 2x more

Unlimited tax breaks. Patel sells to Patel sells to Patel, etc

Paging ragincajin to post a cut/paste and link with bold text. Assume he explains his point. Or not.

Sell hot breakfast and lunch items for good profit.

I have always heard that gas stations don't make shite off actual gas. I mean they make some money but not a lot. However, gas is what gets people in the door to buy other things in the store

I see a lot of biggies at my work with those big 32-44oz polar soda drinks.

Freedom gas station where I live used to do really good business. Indian bought it and it's now out of business. They let it go to crap, empty shelves, warm beer cooler, items not priced. You walked on there and it just felt shady. People in town stopped going.
Plans just revealed that someone is putting in a Circle K in town. We already have two Casey's. Kinda pissed. I'm convinced that if I built a Kwik Star/Kwik Trip the place would print money. Want one here so bad.

Most foreign own are older stations that original owners want out of. As said, fuel brings you in but inside sales is where the money is made.
You still see new stations going up "QT" seems to be a new smaller brand of "Buckees" (sp) but these cost a lot to get started. 30 years ago a Chevron cost $1 million for an 8-pump station to build new. Not sure what cost is these days for new.
To original question, not sure how profitable they are, but not many lose money unless in the middle of da hood (and those probably do ok).

I know a couple of people that own them. They definetly are not getting rich, but can do okay if they have some family that doesn’t mind working in them. If you have to hire folks to work in it, theft by your own employees almost makes it unprofitable.

It’s not the gas that makes the money. It’s the crap they sell inside
This is basically it. Gas stations still make 7-10 cents on a gallon of gas as they have for years. In the “old days”, service stations made money off of oil, tires, wiper blades, etc. That was replaced by the c-store. The gas turns a small profit, but the real money is in selling beer,n cigarettes, soft drinks and junk food.
