Right, and those were the conversations leaders of schools were having back then. It wasn't simple as let's integrate and poof. There was a lot of bs to navigate. One letter in god knows whatever context. Shouldn't tarnish a legacy. Stop being a pansy.

Moral absolutism is dangerous.

As a an example, watch Hattie McDaniel’s Oscar acceptance speech from 1939. She mentions at least once that she will continue to be a “credit to her race” in film. She was also segregated from the rest of the attendees at the ceremony. This is in progressive Hollywood, no less.

A black actress today would be crucified if she gave a similar speech. Even though she wasn’t treated as an equal, she was still recognized for her incredible acting performance. Times change.

We’re it not for the whites in Hollywood at that time, the path for black actors would not have been cleared. However, if we use a moral absolutist argument, 1940s Hollywood is evil and Hattie McDaniel is a sellout instead of a trailblazer.

Back to the issue at hand: I’m not defending Middleton, but his views were nearly universally held by whites in 1960s Louisiana. He should be judged based on standards of his time.

I have some great quotes from Middleton on the following years of his service on racial relations but am on mobile and have trouble capturing them. I will do so tomorrow.

You don’t remember walking around the library and seeing all the racist stuff? Give me a break. You were probably at the secret KKK meetings in the basement. Go apologize for your privilege and wash some feet.

Two years after his retirement, Middleton was appointed by Louisiana’s governor, John McKeithen, as chair of the Commission on Human Relations, Rights, and Responsibilities, a biracial panel aimed at keeping the peace following the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. By 1966, the National Conference of Christians and Jews selected Middleton for its annual brotherhood award. That year, the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters awarded Middleton a bronze plaque, honoring him as the Louisianan of the Year for his accomplishments in racial peace-keeping.

Dude he was white. So he’s racist and must be absolutely destroyed for something in his past no matter what else he did with his life.

After all, the best way to fight racism to attack people of a certain race because of the color of their skin.

We must look into everyone’s past and if there is even a single smidgeon of a problem then that person must be destroyed and erased from memory.

Alton Sterling and George Floyd were big teddy bears who had a troubled past but do not focus on their past. After all they were reformed and you shouldn’t judge them on their past. They were attacked because of their skin color and we should all be equal.

All you white peoples should be ashamed of and disgusted by your past. You cannot be proud of it. It is not something to be celebrated and it must be destroyed. Every aspect of it. The good and bad must be throw out together.

We should celebrate our roots in African culture. After all, even if some atrocities were committed by Africans in Africa it’s where we came from and it’s our history so we can celebrate it.

Didn’t you know, only progressives like Joe Biden are allowed to evolve and change their minds?

Everyone saying it’s only because he’s white needs to actually read that letter. He’s being picked on because he openly argued for segregation in 1960.

Now, he went on to change that opinion and work diligently to integrate, but like I said in the previous post, the mob gets to choose who’s opinion evolves, not rational people.

If he had never written that letter, but rather had a phone call and said those exact same words, do you think his name is being drug through the mud? I don’t.

Sounds like he was giving them a "safe space". Isn't this exactly what the left is asking for today?

Black students demand segregated spaces from white students

Segregated ‘safe spaces’

Black college students across the country have demanded that they be segregated from white peers, calling for “safe spaces” on campuses meant only for so-called students of color.

“Though we did not like it, we accepted Negroes as students," Middleton wrote UT chancellor Harry Ransom on Oct. 27 of that year.

"At no time,” the letter continues, “has a Negro occupied a room with a white student. We keep them in a given area and do not permit indiscriminate occupancy."

The letter goes on: "Our Negro students have made no attempt to attend social functions, participate in athletic contests, go in the swimming pool, etc. If they did, we would, for example, discontinue the operation of the swimming pool."

OP was clearly blind to the truth. Jesus.

Yeah, to heck with being a war hero, rising from private to 3 star general and holding Bastogne. He said some shite everyone else said during The 50’s so everything he did in his life for this country is now moot, and all we can say is he was a racist.

frick LSU.
