Had a guy say "we're getting raped over the coals" in a meeting last week. When he got called on it, he tried to say it's an expression that varies depending on region and that raped and raked are used equally across the country.

plural noun: malaprops
the mistaken use of a word in place of a similar-sounding one, often with unintentionally amusing effect, as in, for example, “dance a flamingo ” (instead of flamenco ).
"he's always been prone to gaffes and malapropisms"

That is a real malapropism. It has to have humor; it’s not just using the wrong word.

Someone used the term necrophilia instead of narcolepsy at work when referring to another coworker's condition. Not the same thing!

Old-timers disease
card shark
all of the sudden
And I know these aren't exactly malaprops, but they drive me insane:
"I have a pit in my stomach"
"I resonate with that"

They always crack me up.
See many, many of these on TD, best example off the top of my head:
"rift-raft": (low class, unsavory people)...
Former stepfather many years ago was repeating a news story about a girl who was being abused and starved; he described how the neighbors got suspicious when they saw her "emancipated" body...
Guy writing a comment in the newspaper talking about how David Duke was a just another ranting "demi-god"...

Don’t think one can determine which is “correct,” but I’ve heard cooking with grease my whole life.
