There have been miracle stories, so there's hope that he got lost and figured out a way to survive, albeit becoming less likely every day.
And there's always that possibility that he staged this whole thing and he's on the run.

I agree, a knife for sure, but a gun is a non-negotiable must have.

Ran into a dude a few weeks ago solo hiking in Colorado (thought this may have been him honestly). He was in this remote town washing clothes so we had a few beers. I couldn't believe he did it without a gun either, but he said it was more due to firearm prohibitions in some of the parks he was traversing. He has 2 kids too and I thought he was nuts regardless of his reasoning.

Highest elevation in Wyoming is 13,000 feet

Highest elevation Colorada is 14,000 feet.

Next time, don’t use average elevation to make an argument.

**Grant Gardner Update**

August 11, 2025

Since our last update considerable resources and man power have been deployed in the search for Grant Gardner. The outpouring of support received throughout Wyoming, as well as nationally, on behalf of the Gardner family and the SAR teams who are exhausting every possibility, no matter how small, to find Mr. Gardner.

This report is to update all, that we are actively working to resolve this emergency. The search as you will see has been very active.

For convenience to SAR teams, the command trailer at West Ten Sleep Trailhead is temporarily not manned. Command operations were moved to the Greybull Wyoming airport for the time being.

Tips from hikers in the area are being routed directly to the Big Horn County WYOMING Sheriff’s Office Dispatch at 307-568-2324.

Those tips are welcomed, and are being followed up on as received.

Citizens NOT associated with SAR groups have been volunteering to provide their services. Due to liability, we can’t pair these volunteers with team members, however, we welcome any capable experienced outdoor men and women to assist on their own. We respectfully request searchers advise the Sheriff’s Office of their plans before departing, and notify the Sheriff’s Office when they return. GPS tracking of searches would be greatly appreciated. It should be noted the search is on public land, no special permission is required.

Please do not add to the current challenge!

If you are not specifically familiar with this remote wilderness, stay home!

Your prayers on everyone’s behalf are just as important.

This area is unforgiving and anyone who enters it does so at their own liability/risk.

The Cloud Peak Wilderness is deceptively expansive, remote, and snow is starting to fall at higher elevations above 10,000 feet. Very thorough searches of these areas have been performed. Mr. Gardner could plausibly be in several areas and routes, all of which have been extensively searched.

To illustrate what is being done to search, the following is a partial list of assets and personnel who are currently, or have been working directly on this search.

• Drones with cameras, capable of identifying colors and minute disturbances.
• Drones, helicopters, and planes with FLIR capabilities.
• Military grade Bluetooth/cell phone detection equipment has been deployed extensively.
• Wyoming DCI cell phone forensics teams have been working with analysts from Gardner’s cell phone provider, and FBI forensics teams to assist in locating Mr. Gardner.
• Multiple dog tracking teams.
• Horse and foot teams.
• Wyoming National Guard.
• Private Pilots
• First Flight of Wyoming
• Big Horn County SAR
• Johnson County SAR
• Sheridan County SAR
• Washakie County SAR
• Park County SAR
• Teton County SAR
• Big Horn County Dispatch
• Big Horn County Emergency Management
• Wyoming Office of Homeland Security
• Garmin GPS
• OnX Mapping Service
• US Forest Service
• Big Horn National Forest Personnel
• KCJJB Horses
• AMF Backcountry Horses and weed spraying crews.
• Many private individuals and others who very much wish to remain anonymous, but whose contributions have been humbling to us all.

Our team is tired, but pushing forward. Many interested press organizations have reached out to us. We believe in transparency and the public right to know, however, we are putting our energies and time into locating Grant Gardner, we will only release information through this method until we can catch up.

Respectfully,
Sheriff Ken Blackburn

That's a lot of resources to find one person. Yeesh. If they do find him alive,(which is doubtful) he should feel guilty.

On the flip side, it is excellent real-time training/experience. You can run drills all the time but nothing beats testing your teams ability to perform like the real thing.

is a long hike. Like 25 miles round trip from parking lot. Not something all people can do in one day. ETA- if he was planning a 3 day trip it's not that far.

If it was a 3 day trip then you gotta ask a couple obvious questions:
1.) where was he camping that day?
2.) when he summitted did he have all his camping gear?
3.) why summit so late on this sort of trip?
4.) where was he camping that night?
5.) was there anyone else on the trail that saw him?

Sadly if they haven’t found anything it’s very unlikely a bear or cougar, it’s likely he fell or he got hurt and tried to take a short cut.

I’m still going with this option. The messages to the wife if “hey honey I’m at the summit” seemed like an odd thing to do. It’s like a guy who’s at his girlfriend’s house texting his wife “I’m at the gym honey. don’t come looking for me. Cuz I’m at the gym.”

And that’s an incredibly expensive search to find a guy who either doesn’t want to be found or is dead. Waste of money after day 3.
