Upright, canister, stick? Number one corded stick vacuum according to Consumer Reports is Shark Apex UpLight Lift-Away Duoclean. Model LZ601. Just bought an LZ602 and it's being shipped so can't comment.
Also check out Vacuum Wars on youtube. Dude seems honest and a vacuum guru.

Windsor, Riccar, Hoover, Kirby, Sanitair...all offer models far better than anything from Dyson or Shark. You can pick up a decent mid-level commercial-grade unit for much less than the cost of the best Dyson model and have something that will outperform and outlast it.

Shark Professional kicks arse, and is a fraction of the cost of Dyson.

BuTure Cordless
one of my wife's instaladies liked and recommended this one. i feel like i've seen very similar ones at the same or less, but her lady swore it was as good as the dyson.
i used it this last weekend and was actually fairly impressed across the board. i'm sure the ones at walmart do the same job.

I just bought a Dyson V-15 and it's pulling up stuff out of the carpet that my maids have missed for years. It's honestly one of the most impressive pieces of equipment I've ever owned. I hate to be proud of a vacuum but this thing is amazing. It's not cheap, though.

Dyson Ball - just make sure the cheap plastic wheels aren't broken when you buy them. Otherwise, they're outstanding (if pricey).
Shark would be next.

I’ve had 2 Miele vacuums and IMO these are the best vacuums out there. Not cheap ($300-$1000+ range) but worth it. You can easily clean every corner of the house with the telescoping wand and attachments.
They are powerful and very easy to maintain and use. No matter how dumb your wife or maid is, she can take care of the maintenance on a Miele.
ETA I love my Miele so much I bought a cheaper one for my pharmacy, that beast can suck the staples out of the carpet.

I have a DeWalt cordless shopvac, a Milwaukee cordless vac, and a Ryobi. They all work well for what they are.

Got. 3 Dysons corded for downstairs older corded upstairs and a cordless for everyday upkeep.
Housekeeper seems to prefer the newer corded Dyson for most cleaning.
