what about when "personal liberties" affect people around them?
It’s illegal to smoke weed in public nearly everywhere, it’s illegal to drive stoned everywhere. What other restrictions would you like to see imposed?

Good, it’s safer that way and provides health benefits to tens of millions.
I love the smell of fresh buds, it might be one of the greatest fragrances on earth. The after smoke smell I’m not a big fan off, but it doesn’t bother me nearly as much as some others.
As mentioned earlier the article was probably paid for by alcohol leaders.

Same but that’s not legal.
Making marijuana illegal again isn’t going to stop Tyrone from smoking his blunts driving around. He does it because he knows the cops/da won’t do shite to him. Same reason other crimes are up.

Yes but there are better ways to consume it now than by smoking

quote:You’re conflating lawful private use with unlawful public behavior, and those are already treated differently under the law. Smoking in prohibited spaces, driving impaired, or creating a nuisance is still illegal whether enforcement is strict or not. If your concern is people impacting others, the solution you’re arguing for is more consistent policing of existing illegal conduct, not rolling back the legal status of people who are following the rules. Liberty has always meant drawing lines around harmful behavior, not banning the underlying activity because some people abuse it.

I get a nice whiff driving down the road almost every day. It really makes you wonder what percentage of drivers I'm sharing the road with are driving around absolutely blitzed.

The alcohol level in those fermented drinks back then would have been extremely low.
False. Wine was much stronger in those days than it is now.

This is the most amazing part of the story.
Headline should be NY Times admits it was wrong.

My take is mixed pretty strongly but I think curtailing public usage would solve a lot of problems.

100% without question, false.
They diluted it considerably.
quote:
Wine in biblical times was generally weaker than modern wine, primarily because it was almost always diluted with water before consumption. While the natural, undiluted fermented wine might have had an alcohol content of 10–12%, standard practice in Jewish and Roman culture involved mixing it, often with 3 parts water to 1 part wine, reducing the alcohol content significantly.
Key Aspects of Biblical Wine Strength:
Dilution Practices: Drinking "unmixed" or "neat" wine was considered barbaric or reckless, with 3:1 (water-to-wine) being a common ratio.
Lower Initial ABV: Without modern additives or yeast, natural fermentation usually produced wine with lower alcohol levels compared to modern vintages.
Safety and Consumption: Wine was a staple beverage, consumed frequently, and was safer than many water sources. Diluted wine was consumed for hydration, not primarily for drunkenness.
"Strong Drink": The Bible distinguishes between "wine" (\(yayin\)) and "strong drink" (\(shekar\)), which was a separate, higher-alcohol category, often made from grain or fruit. While some scholars argue that the undiluted wine could still be relatively strong (around \(11\%\)-\(12\%\)), the mixture consumed daily was considerably less potent than modern \(13\%\)-\(15\%\) ABV wines.

This is an editorial opinion article. With that in mind, what would you say was the purpose of the article?
That legalization hasn’t worked out as intended (shocker) and that perhaps, just perhaps, it needs to be reigned in in public areas. Smoke away in your own home, but quit making everyone else smell it. Same as with any other smoking.

Does the smell of alcohol permeate public spaces the same as skunk weed does? I don’t smell anyone drinking a beer in the parking lot at Tiger stadium.
The whole campus smells like bourbon.

I've been convinced that teenagers and marijuana don't mix. Prefrontal cortex development is real. For every anecdote about "well, I went to high school with a kid who smoked weed every day and he graduated with honors," there are 10 or 15 kids who became losers along the way and lowered their acheivement ceiling.
100%
And often lost in the “at least it’s not alcohol” rebuttal. Also it’s clearly addictive in quite a few people just like most things that make you feel good.
