It’s not really tax on the land, but rather tax on the services that the parish/county or city/municipality provides such as fire protection, police, library, infrastructure, etc. But, aren’t sales tax supposed to cover some of those items? I hate taxes.

As a law abiding tax paying citizen, I truly don’t understand why there is a need to pay taxes on a property that’s paid for.

Found the original land grant for the land I own from back in 1915 it stated it was theirs to hold in perpetuity…. Not the case today as if you fail to pay the tax man it will be seized. I should be able to live in a shanty in the woods on property I own if I so choose that is true freedom

Improve and maintain the community? I think someone forgot to tell our government that’s what the money is for. We pay a ridiculous amount of taxes for the library system that has a very healthy bank account. It’s time to stop the nonsense.

When you take a look at property taxes, you realize that nothing has really changed in a couple thousand years.

It comes down to domain.

Your domain is the parish or county your land resides on.

Government replaced the king. One man is not as intimidating to the people over time. “Why are we paying money to one person?” But the ominous “government” or “the system” makes it faceless.

We’re just wards of this system. It doesn’t work for us, it’ll always protect itself over us.

This is interesting to me…who granted this land to your ancestors? I thought the original land grants were far earlier than that.

Isn't property tax the oldest known tax? Honestly if there weren't property taxes rich families would own every bit of land by now.

You should get a homestead exemption on your primary residence. As in 0 property tax, not a discount.

Fairly retarded, but I can still spell "fricking."

A water pipe from the well on my property

the electricity?

From a utility provider that isn't municipal.

My wife's LE and I'm a FF/EMT, so we live here.

There's no curb and I'm not particularly fond of the road, either.

Pretty much. I live in BFE, TX. This is assuming I know what you mean by your made up "nether void" term.

Had a buddy inherit a 3rd generation home on Lake Austin. Being young, he couldn’t afford the property taxes and had to sell it.

These taxes are voted in using special elections when no one is paying attention. They pass them for ten years at a time. If we all just wake and vote no they would go away in 10 years

I think a conveyence tax is the oldest tax known. Kings and Barons would charge taxes just for traveling down a road.

Are people so dense as to not realize that is actually a tax for the use in schools and community. Does not matter if house is paid for.

This is the problem with modern governance. The “services” part is either dogshit or nonexistent.

Services = Police, fire, schools, libraries

No money tree. They don’t fund themselves.

I’m not a tax fan! If you knew how much we are paying in 2026. Holy moly.

But in our designed society, taxes are still part of life. Just is.

It’s a good policy to ensure against aristocracy and promote the economy. Land should not sit in the hands of heirs indefinitely and, more importantly, it should always be developed to the highest and best use.

Having some snot-nosed heir without the means or ability to keep or make the land useful for society is a bad thing.

You are welcome to pass money and businesses to your child and let him squander those, but real estate is too important for society.

You sure that is happening? Destroying forests and farmland for shitty DSLD /DR Horton tract homes is not the best use of land is it?

I get your point but unchecked development is not a net good for society.
