Get a Monster Miata. Miata with a Ford 302 power plant.

If you're looking for the S2000 experience, get a Miata club with the BBR package. That really is the only modern equivalent that will get you into that S2000 size, weight, power and handling window. The S2000 will have a noticeable power difference, but the Miata and it's 15-20 years worth on engineering advancements, is much more sorted with more progressive handling and ultimately if you do track days or autocross, the Miata turns better times. Naturally this assumes both cars are in stock form. If you don't fit in the Miata, look into the 86/BRZ twins or a Corolla GR. I can't recommend a WRX anymore. I used to have a WRX STI about 10 years ago, it was fun, but really unrefined. Some disclosure I own a Miata RF with the BBR package. The Civic Type R / Integra twins are great drivers. I've had a chance to drive both and another disclosure I own an Integra Type S as well, If you are doing more track driving the Type R is your car, if you are spending most of your time on public roads, the Integra, in my opinion a better choice. Giving a comparison on firmness of the ride and aggressiveness, with 10 being the most firm and aggressive, with its available adjustments the type R covers a range from 7-10 while the Type S covers a range from 5-8. I know a few Type R owners that have swapped in the Type S ECU because their Type R was just to firm on a day to day basis. Now, if you want to get up into the bigger, more powerful, heavier and expensive cars, there are a bunch of choices out there from Corvettes, Mustangs, BMW M cars, Audi's etc. But if you're looking for something that is light and puts an emphasis on handling over big power, there's really only a couple cars left that fit that mold, like the Miata. Long story short, my current lineup is an Integra Type S as my daily and I have a Miata Club RF with the BBR package as my autocross, track day, weekender car. We also have a truck for all the utility type stuff. Went that route because the Miata engine is so robust and the cost of consumables is so low. Tracking a car is expensive as hell and I went with the lowest pain route, but also wanted a well-sorted and fun daily driver instead of something boring. I guess I could have poold that money and went with something in $80-90k range, but I wouldn't put something like that on a track and doing track days and autocross is something I really enjoy.

Love the ITS, but scared of the notorious wastegate actuator sound most owners get when decelerating between 4-3k rpms during engine breaking. You also have this problem? Apparently applies to the CTR as well.

One of my sons has the 2024 Civic Type R. Now that car is great to drive and you can get on it! Right under $50K and it delivers.
That wing just kills me. For the track, I’m sure the downforce would be nice, but for the street, I’d try to hide.

This is getting downvoted because of the dykes and vapes narrative but my 2017 wrx is fun as shite to drive around in. The AWD system is incredible in Subarus and that model engine is pretty solid unless you abuse the shite out of it. I also get low 30’s on the interstate. It’s responsive as hell.

Id be looking at whatever AWD car I could afford, with the most power.
AWD makes as all Ayrton.

(OK, not really, but still...)

I’d love an RS7 or M5 Comp but they fricked that up with the battery. I’m a sucker for a fun twin turbo V8.

The increase in power from the turbo will never match the joy you got from the NA vetch crossover your s2000 had.

I didn't see budget but if slightly less than baller money I'd suggest either a Porsche 964 or Nissan GTR. Both would be used and get the best and newest version within your budget. Best of all, unless you wrap it around a tree or put excessive miles on it either will likely worth more money that you paid not too long from now.

For less money, the VW Golf R is a hell of a fun car. I prefer the DSG than the manual because it's faster and well...launch control is fun.

Seems you prefer nimble lighter cars with lower power output ( S2000, Miata, etc)

My rec is a Lotus Elise/ Lotus Exige, or Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe Track Package. They are light, barebones inside.... manual steering. You can drive the car to track day, race it and drive it home.

Unless you get too hot in the middle of the corner and use too much brake and spin and tear the air dams off going through the grass like a knucklehead...

I mean, but who would do that?
Ha.

Throw the right tunes in it and it’s a drivers car. They need the maps opened up to be really fun.

Love the Golf R, just afraid of that VW reliability. Acura Integra Type S is the front runner. Looks professional and just mean, versatile where you can switch between Comfort that will feel like a stiff Accord and Sport+ that will feel like a Civic Type R (because it is one in sheep clothing). Gearbox feels as good as the s2k. It looks like a sedan but is actually a hot hatch that you can fit two mountain bikes in it with the front wheels off easily with the right protective padding (would recommend Hiplok) and blankets on top.

I haven’t been in the sports cars market since 2018 since selling my last s2000, so just confused on how they got the Integra Type S and Civic Type R to corner so well as FWD cars…. Any technical folks that can explain that to me like I’m 5?

Or I could just roll the dice on a nice, low mileage s2000 at $40k. I don’t care how reliable that car was originally. A 20 year old car will have rust, interior rips, reduced hp, and so on. Everything will eventually break and those parts have to be scarce these days, especially with only 66k made over 9 years in the US—half are totaled.

Mercedes ruined some of their sedans and suvs also. They put a 4 banger hybrid in theirs.

I've heard the complaints, but personally have never noticed it on mine. I think it's one of those things that the folks who have the issue or are bothered by it, complain very loudly and constantly. It's apparently more noticeable with the windows down, I don't drive with the windows down much and the Integra has a little better sound deadening than the CIiic. A few folks have had it fixed by using some sort of clip that limits the movement of the wastegate, but I don't know much about that.
