I remember coming home from 5th grade in 1987 and watching the heavy metal half hour.

We had cable so all of my friends came over to watch the debut. They didn't have many videos, so it got old pretty quick.

What Is the MTV Rewind App?
Currently hosted at LINK viewers are greeted with a huge archived database filled with multiple video channels pulling from six decades of music. At present, nine channels exist — MTV 1st Day, MTV 70s, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, MTV 2000s, MTV 2010s, MTV 2020s, Yo! MTV Raps, Headbangers Ball —along with a Shuffle All option as well.
In total, at press time, just shy of 28,000 music videos had been loaded in just ready to charge up some nostalgia filled goodness. And you'll find some classic commercials thrown in for good measure.

How is this for funny? One of the original VJ's, Martha Quinn is now a, yep you guessed it, FM radio host!

Boomer here.
MTV debuted literally 3 days after I turned 21. I thought it was cool as all get out. That lasted for about 3 years and the fad was over for me.

All of them. MTV since day one and Friday Night Videos/Night Tracks before that.

People talk about Disney pushing a gay agenda, but MTV was the big name in the game back in the day. The way that people talk about social media having so much influence over young people today, that was MTV back in the '90s and early 2000s.

Does the guy that runs the record label want to explain the complexities of licensing music?

My earliest recollections of MTV are The Clash's Rock the Casbah and Devo's Whip It.

Jack Mac and the Heart Attack.
Had they not been so hard up for content, we may have never heard of Duran Duran’s music.

The channel itself hasn't closed. They just shut down all of their music-only channels.

My 60 something year old dad still watches MTV classic music videos when we’re at their house

In middle school and high school, old school Road Rules and Real World were prime entertainment.
May have started the reality show downfall of TV and MTV itself, but at the time it was good stuff.

I didn’t know then, but noticing TRL go from playing entire songs to progressively shorter clips of them was the harbinger of what would become our media culture.

When I was stationed in Japan, the movie theatre on base would play music videos before the movie started. Saw a video by Talking Heads and Dire Straits, and this was in 1977/1978, three years before MTV.

Once The Real World was hit, that was the beginning of the end for MTV. The Real World was cool at the time and kind of a cultural phenomenon, but it slid into being more and more sensationalized and absurd. It also became their core programming instead of something interesting and unique.
I probably stopped watching MTV late high school or early college in the mid 90’s. I used to love MTV spring break when I was in middle school and early high school. Made me dream of going to college and how awesome it would be.
Sad what it became. Still kind of sad that it’s gone, even though it was an empty shell of what it once was.
