Being “on-call” for a net $375k/yr to pilot a ship X number of miles through the crescent city gauntlet until a normal pilot can take over?
How long are you *ACTUALLY* piloting the ship? A few hours here and there?
I’d take that job in a heartbeat... sure the standards and requirements are rigorous, but it’s also a “good ol’ boy network” that you can’t just “apply for”...
At the end of the day, it’d be an easy enough job and the pay FAR outweighs the hassles.

How many people can say they can run a 500’ loaded ship up and down the Mississippi River without hitting a refinery in their sleep?
Likely many more if these jobs were actually opened to the full labor market, you dimwitted trash bag

Piloting a tow boat with a huge string of barges up and down the river is a lot harder than bringing a ship to a dock.

Sounds like a tough job with a lot of responsibility. They still don’t merit that much salary.

Yes. But they do a lot of the state of Louisiana and they keep our economy alive and our ecosystems safe.
Allowing them to hold the state hostage for raises like this current one correct?

Not defending the corrupt fricks, but SW Pass is the least of the problems on the River in terms of navigation. English Turn is rough, but Algiers Point is downright treacherous on a good day.

If you actually speak to a River Boat pilot in person and know them they will laugh about how much they get paid. They know it's completely outrageous.
Yup.
One of the pilots I know is in his early 30s, has a wife who doesn't work, 3 kids under 6, and they live on State Street uptown in a $1M+ home, and both he and his wife drive $75k+ vehicles, and when they vacation, it ain't to Gulf Shores.
But yeah, pilots are "hurting" and need more money. It's bullshite. He admitted to me the last time they got a raise (18 most ago?) that it was pretty much just a money grab by the guild.

Why don’t you got to the US Coast Guard web site and review the requirements to obtain a “Masters License for unlimited tonnage” which is required to be a river pilot, and you will see how ridiculous what you posted is.

I went to High School with several River Pilots, etc. For some of them deductive reasoning on a basic level was a stretch.

Who would waste their lives just to make between $75million-$130million with such a dangerous process of driving a boat.
Hahaha.
That's $75,000 - $130,000.
$75mm is $75,000,000.

I know what it takes. I have a 200 ton masters right now and I’m currently working on a 1600 ton. Yes it requires a lot of studying but the schools prepare you for the test to make it a lot easier. I wasn’t implying that it’s simple but it’s not rocket science. I know some dumb mother frickers with unlimited licenses but they went to school and studied.

i guarantee you dont need an IQ over 100 to drive a river boat up and down a 70 mile stretch of river, most people could do it, no reason to pay them close to a mill year when they are already the most overpaid profession in the state

Agree
And these pilots make $200,000 on the high end. This means that the River pilots who are paid -$600,000 are overpaid by 400,000 on average. The difference in the responsibility is dramatic too. The River pilots have not liability if something happens. They don’t actually take the wheel of these ships after all/. They stand or sit in the wheelhouse and give instruction.
Tug captains are at the wheel, night and day for hours at a time during good and bad weather. They have to manage the crew too.

Riverboat pilots make more than most athletes playing major professional sports (league min in most leagues is ~500k)

No they don't. Google median NBA/NFL/MLB salary.

Now about how much they make. Yes, they get paid about 650,000 as I said before but they are considered independent contractors and thus have to pay about half of that back in taxes.
nah brah...they'll run that through an s corp. Pay themselves some salary and pay much less than half of that in taxes
