There is a charity called Child Impact transporting young families to Germany from Poland. They are a Christian organization based out of Tennessee and are at the border. It can’t hurt to reach out to them given the situation.
Maybe there’s a list that exists they can be put on in advance of their arrival or you can gather information about transportation/the general situation from them.

UPDATE 4/4/22

I will check them out, thanks. I believe they have a church group that has already agreed to take them into Germany but I am getting that from Lisa. Natalie, her mother, told Lisa they will be in Warsaw for two nights than off to Germany.

I seen a picture of where they are staying in Warsaw and it is basically a big auditorium with everyone sleeping on the floor. I volunteered in a similar environment before and there isn't much sleep to be had. I will try to attach a picture later and I have one of her father Slava who is still delivering babies in Lisichansk.

I picked up some Euros, made sure the credit and debit cards were good to use in Germany, emailed and called the state dept., priced some plane tickets (still waiting on the city). I also found some legal resources in Germany that can help.

I talked to Lisa about getting Slava out. I'm fairly sure Russia is blocking Lisa from seeing what is happening in Bucha so I'm not sure Lisa understands how dangerous his situation is.

I told her he needs to delete his phone messages, have a go bag ready, full gas tank, perhaps a vodka bottle laced with sedatives if he gets unwanted quest and talk to a neighbor about the pets. He doesn't have any intentions of leaving but he needs to have a plan in place just in case. I'm also going to keep pressuring him to leave.

Anna and Mischa are staying in West Ukraine. I will try to get an update on them, also her husband Genna in Kharkiv, and her sister Luba in Kiev. My wife's first husband is also in Kiev.

I'm not sure if you guys remember the story of an elderly lady I became friends with in Mariupol, Sveta. I think of her a lot. I will try to get an update on her as well and tell her story again when I get an update.

Thanks again for all the support and prayers. As soon as my wife gets some internet, I should be able to get an update on everyone.

Great news that they made it to Warsaw! I bet you are relieved and cannot wait to see your family. Continued prayers for all of you.

UPDATE 4/5/22

I spoke with the wife this morning. They housing they were told they could have in Germany is no longer available. They are offering to send them to Netherland but they will have to stay in another refugee camp. They have the credit cards so I told them to get a hotel in Netherlands for now so they can actually sleep.

So I have a question for the OT Lounge. If this comes down to me paying for them to stay somewhere until America decides how they are going to let refugees in, where should they go?

Russia - They could stay with Lisa. Her son could go to school there and they know the language. Her Mother could possibly even work there as a Doctor. The negative is that they could face resentment and persecution if this war drags on and who knows her son could be dragged into fighting in this war.

Stay in Europe - They wouldn't have to travel for and even if they don't have free housing, many of these countries have other resources set up to help the refugees like medical care, education, etc.

Canada - I'm reading stories of Ukrainians sleeping in tents in Tijuana and some are being allowed into the US through a slow vetting process. Perhaps we can go through the same process in Canada?

Costa Rica - Just a cheap but cool place to hang out until America decides what they are going to do but not a long term option.

I'm going to do my research and contact that charity posted recently. I was just curious if any you had some good thoughts on the subject.

Russia is a big NO from me. I know she has family there but it seems like an awful idea to go there with the current situation.

I'd have her go somewhere in Europe. I would think the UK is the top option but from what I've heard their process is slow and complicated. LINK that's the link if you think it's worth a try.

quote:

Under this scheme, people in the UK can nominate an individual or family to stay with them rent-free for at least six months.

As of 29 March, 2,700 Ukraine sponsorship visas had been issued out of 28,300 applications.

Refugees who come via the scheme will be able to live and work in the UK for up to three years, and access healthcare, welfare and schools.

Applications are made online, and both hosts and refugees will be vetted. Hosts will receive £350 a month and there will be no cap on the numbers able to come to the UK.

Are you talking about your wife? Are you saying your wife and child can’t get into the USA now because they are refugees?

Back in the day, the cheapest lodging in Europe were the Youth Hostels which were not limited by age.

You paid to join the parent organization, and the cost per night was a fraction of hotels.

No. My wife and baby can come back at any time. The hold up is because of her son and mother. Once a America decides what visa they need to enter, I can bring them all here.

This can go two ways. They need a temporary place to stay until America announces how or America never lets them in, which case they will more of a long term option.

For now, I think I will look at a temporary option, no more than 3 months.

Czech republic is an option since there are many Russian speakers there and the housing is probably cheaper than West Europe.

Russia seems like a bad idea. Get them to North America if that’s an option. At least you’d have access to them.

What do you do for work? Could you do it from Costa Rica? A tropical rest for the family might help everyone after what I’m sure has been a harrowing experience for everyone.

This isn't something that the politicians you have been talking to can help get done? Rather than waiting for a blanket plan, maybe a special exception can be made for your case since your wife and daughter are already citizens? Maybe worth a shot to see if anybody you have talked to could pull some strings.

I know we shite on Trudeau, but i would vote for Canada. Haven’t you had enough of second/third hand information that you have to have translated for you? This is your baby too. If they are in Canada, YOU can talk directly to the authorities and know what the fk is going on. There’s also an ocean between them and the war, whatever side you pull for.

Costa Rica is appealing because I have been there a couple of times and love it. I can find a house to rent for cheap right on the beach. They will be close, I can spend time with them and once America opens up they are close.

The down side is they don't know the language. Plane tickets there will be expensive and a long trip and they are exhausted right now.

I'm leaning towards Europe for a few weeks, until we figure something out. I can fly to them for now.

Yep this.

OP I’d strongly look for an apt to rent for them. No reason to go to a hotel right now, go on Booking.com or Airbnb or somewhere else and see if you can talk to the owner/ host and arrange something. Can likely find something for $50-100/ night for a couple weeks.

I'm going to check out this website set up by Harvard students to help in this situation.

Most of the countries close to Ukraine are getting saturated so that is one issue with staying close.

This Harvard website "Ukraineshelter.com" looks promising. It has list of host families. Some even help with transportation. I'm going to dig there some more.

The wife just called and told me they are going to bus them to Switzerland tomorrow and give them place to stay there. They are not certain what kind of accommodations they will get there but since they are traveling with baby they will try to help them more.
