Not sure of the answer to your question, and I love to play both, I could always golf by myself or easily get a pick up game of golf. Tennis not so much. Another is the fact that golf between a 1 handicap and 20 handicap can be enjoyable and done. Tennis talent level differences are much harder to sync up for casual play.
Just my observations.

One is easy and laid back and most people can do it at some level. The other is a motherfricking workout.
Golf is more difficult but less strenuous. Tennis is easier but it is like August Two-a-Days in football.
I have played all three at the highschool level. Tennis can be a bitch if you are serious about it.

think tennis declined in popularity with the technology improvements in the rackets
That may play a very small part. The bigger technology advancement has been the strings though, particularly polyester strings.
But an American male hasn’t won a Grand Slam since Agassi won the US Open in 2003. That’s a very long drought, and American viewers just aren’t going to tune in if there isn’t an American in contention. Which is unfortunate because IMO the battles between Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic over the last 20 years have been the pinnacle of professional tennis.

Tennis was huge until the 90s.
We played because it was free and there were courts nearby. And we didn’t have online video games.
Golf wasn’t a daily option and harder to learn.

as we all know, golf isn’t even a sport, it is a game
For starters, go frick yourself... All sports are games dipshit..
Biggest difference between the two straight up is that golf is a mental and tennis is a physical.. That's why Pro Golfers have longer careers making it much more lucrative in the long term.. Plus a lot of golfers I know play tennis recreationally.

Tennis is a very, very mental sport.

Also you are making decisions in a split second.
Tennis was huge in the 80s/90s with my grandpa. Watched all the time and knew all the big names.

I’m 54 and in the best shape I’ve been in since my early 20’s. Golf could never do that.
If you walked and carried your bag 18 holes 3 times a week you'd be in great shape. Your statement is false.

The whole “no sleeveless t-shirt, no denim” policy really rubbed you the wrong way, huh?

Handicap system allows people of all ages and abilities to compete. In tennis you must find someone of the same skill and ability to enjoy.
Variety of venues in golf. Mountain, desert, ocean courses all have beautiful views and provide different challenges. Same tennis court, dimensions, etc.
Ability to socialize with friends and family playing golf. Not so much with tennis.

Tennis, especially doubles, is extremely strategic. Partners set up plays for a put away and work together to set up mis-matches and create holes in the court. And, yes, you’re making split second decisions while the point is developing. Unless it’s an unusually long match, I’m usually more mentally exhausted than physically.

A lot of people. Are you kidding? There are entire 50+, 55+ and 60+ leagues and I wish they would stick to them. I hate walking in the court and seeing an old lady or man on the other side. I’m faster and more athletic but they can put that tennis ball anywhere they want with very little effort and will gas you by the end of the 1st set. I always feel like prey when I play an older person.

Lulz.. No... While all sports require a degree of mental acuity you can't convince me that tennis is a real thinking man's/ woman's game.. Also golf is the one sport where the arena in which one plays said sport changes and can change dramatically

My tennis club has college girls that run beer and wine to the courts and sometimes join in on play if we need a fourth for doubles.

I'm 6'1" and weigh 195lbs. Can't play tennis because my body can't take the running. Used to play tennis and enjoyed it, but running and other physical sports have taken their toll on my body. Probably could play pickle ball. But who wants to?

100%.. Tennis is possibly THE most mentally taxing sport, since youre out there on an island by yourself (in singles tennis).. at least with golf, you can consult with ur caddy- though i have no idea how helpful caddies are, but ive heard some pro golfers give their caddies a lot of credit .
