Just a weird thought here but my theory is the over saturation of IPA’s in particular has led to some of the demise of brewery closings.
This is exactly my experience as a consumer. I love beer. I’ve tried all kinds of beer thanks to craft breweries. The IPA explosion ruined them for me. It got to a point where the menu was 60% IPAs, 20% other crafts and the rest were domestics. I stopped going to breweries over it.
Not to mention the cost per pint. I just don’t have the disposable income to blow on $10+ pints of beer anymore. It would be something I do on vacation or something. Hell, I don’t go to bars hardly at all anymore.

I wish there were more sours and gose's to choose from. And that they weren't so damn expensive

IPAs are the dumbest beer fad of all time.
I wouldn't call IPAs a fad. It's the adjunct and hyper fruited IPAs that are the fad that nobody really asked for.
Well, that and the $16 per 4 Coconut Captain Crunch Elderberry 3x Dryhopped IPA.

I think they just oversaturated the market. I don't think we can take any far-reaching economic evidence from it beyond that.
Too many, too fast.
There are still plenty of craft breweries. So, some cities that used to have none, and then had 10, may now have 5.
OMG

It's the natural cycle of a boom industry, there are so many brewies in DFW that when I read of one closing down , I've often never heard of them.. The breweries that have closed whos beer I've tried brewed mediocre beer so it's sort of a Darwin effect. We also have had a few new brewpubs open which concentrate on good food too and they seem to be doing well and I'm patiently waiting on a new brewpub to open just a 5 minute walk from my house.

Good buddy opened a brewery in Lafayette February 2023 and it’s been killing. Might be because there’s no other real brewery in the city and while they have some specialty/gimicky beers, overall he wanted basic good beers: amber, lager, blonde, ale, porter, IPA and they’re all good. The food is very good as well. We always have a good time when we go and it’s very family friendly with live music and yard games almost every weekend.

Istrouma will open but more of a hangout than brewery as they were focused on craft drinks near the end anyway

Maybe the best beer in town, but worst job marketing. They were the first to bring in a permanent food truck (Fat Calf), but couldn't keep up once Flying Heart opened their restaurant and 7th Tap got going. They moved to Bossier too late, I think.
Yea the marketing definitely wasn't there. I remember loving going to their Shreveport location when Fat Calf was there. Good food, atmosphere, 10+ of their own brews.
The new location was nice, but the food was awful and just didn't have the same vibe. I agree they were probably too late although 7th tap was even later to the party and they are doing really good it seems. Shreveport/Bossier really does have a good beer scene. 7th Tap and Great Raft are top notch breweries. I enjoy Flying Heart, just not quite as much.

Surprised they couldn’t keep it going with the drag shows they were having every week
We have stopped supporting these places. Acceptance is fine and dandy but when they crossed over into recruiting children with community events and push-shoving that agenda down our throats every second, I'm out.

Decent one up here in Bossier City closed too. Red River Brewing.
Yeah but 7th Tap Project recently opened right down the street from RR in the East Bank. RR Garage was an awesome space but their food wasn’t good.

Brits are laughing at us.
Just arriving home from London. Every pub I went to with 6-8 taps had 1-2 IPAs. I was surprised.

Breweries are having a tough time right now. 7 dollars a fricking beer for non-ipas, especially given smaller glasses now, is enough that I don't go to anywhere near as many anymore. I used to go to 3 to 4 breweries every week and change, and now I'm lucky if I go to 3 or 4 a month.
That was before some went all in on "all ages drag shows". I was excited to go back to a brewery in Denver in a couple of weeks, and then the idiots had to push a drag show where children can meet the performers after and learn from them. Needless to say that got dropped from our itinerary.

I would think growth of seltzers and people moving to liquor and wine is having an impact.

$176 Billion wasn’t enough

I'm sure the industry will shrink and consolidate. For years people were trying to be the next Ballast Point, and now people will need to come to grips with the fact that most, at best, will be lifestyle businesses and modern pubs for neighborhoods with very limited reach.
But I'm appreciative of those, I think they're ideal for that purpose. A decent small brewery with picnic tables in the parking lot and kids running around is great and an asset to the neighborhood.
