Damn. Seems like the worst of things happen when water is involved.

Yes, he was an experienced hunter, but a very poor swimmer. However, sometimes you get comfortable with things you do over and over (duck hunting via floating blinds) and you don’t think about the worst happening.

RIP DV

Maybe a stupid question, but how do you capsize a pontoon boat?
Rope tied to front of boat. Engine starts. When starting forward, nobody untied the rope. Boat swings under the rope and rope pulls the blind and boat over on it's side. That would be just a guess.

Vast majority of all accidents can be avoided by simply using a little common sense.

Guess that’s why they call them accidents huh?

Cold water is no joke

Some of these big talkers would have drowned instantly in 49 degree water. It's called cold water shock and can happen anytime when falling in water below 60 degrees. The body tries to protect organs at its core, it restricts blood flow to the limbs in cold water. The arms and legs no longer function properly and you can’t swim. It's a miracle that one got out. I've been in some pretty intense life saving training with fighting/panicking victims...add the water temp and you're all dead.

It is unknown whether they had on life jackets.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say they did not

I’m thinking maybe one of the two pontoons had taken on water. In the dark, they may not have noticed it listing. I hate this. They were good people.

I never appreciated the deadly effects of fire and water until the last 5 years or so. Water in itself is such a deadly force but add in a temperature that low and there isnt much hope for a group of people falling into the water like that.

Fire is in a different spectrum but when you talk about those two, you are dealing with seconds between living and dying.

Something similar happened to a 20 something y/o girl on the Buffalo River in AR last year. She ran into a downed tree on the river and her canoe capsized and pinned her under the water against the tree, killing her.

its really not that similar, totally different circumstances. Strainers kill people all the time on rivers. This hunting accident is pretty unusual.

Very sad news. I was in Woodville this weekend and we probably got 9” of rain. I’m sure that current was moving faster than they had ever experienced getting into that blind.

Was it morning or evening hunt? It says reported at 6:30am so it happened in the morning or they didn't get the reports from the previous night accident?

Morning hunts in the dark can definitely be dangerous if you haven't used a blind in awhile.
