I’m also hearing through the grapevine there were 4 jumpseaters onboard.

I thought that was the initial report and they came back and denied it. I could very well be wrong.

Sad, one moment they were at their job location doing whatever, next second they were incinerated. I hope it was quick and they didn't suffer much.

Prayers for the victims and those they left behind.

Awful

Yeah, they mentioned on local news one more has died from his injuries. Burns on 98% of his body. Awful.

Blancolliro update vid. He pretty much times out how far down the runway when the fire bell. No chance of saving. Also brings up AA383.

Man if he's right and its related to the GE CF6, thats going to be a huge deal going forward.

His screenshot at 11:00 is pretty telling.

Yeah the engine remains on AA383 match up to the UPS even after hitting the ground.

Both suffered urbine disk failure. If the American failure happens 2-3 seconds later the result would've been terrible.

That was a scary event. Good chance they were going down if they got past V1. Once that fire started it was not going out.

AA383

I remember it happening but was reading up on the details.

A piece of the failed disc went through the roof of a UPS sorting facility next to O'Hare.

One of his best videos.

If turns out that turbine seration is the culprit, I am wondering if it physically damaged the mounting structure or was there enough time for the fire to weaken the structure? I am assuming all mounting components are thick metal so I can't see fire causing the engine seperation.

Luckily turbine seperation is not a common engine failure.

Overheard on the news that lawyers were already filing suit against Boeing, UPS, and GE even before the NTSB presser.

Just curious, were you a pro supr in the Air Force?

Nope, just a regular old NDI/NDT troop during my time. Got out, finished my degree and put in to go back in through OCS but had just exceeded the entry age after it shifted back down. Just bad timing

Worked at a 130 depot facility in Saudi and later with P&W. Still in quality but have always.kept up with accident investigations since everything we ever stamped in aerospace NDT we are potentially liable for for thirty years. Thus have an invested interest in all aviation related incidents.

Scarcely enough time to make their peace with God. The Grim Reaper comes suddenly at times. We never know. A lesson for everyone - reconcile with your enemy while you can and if possible.

Dang that MD-11 was 34 years old. Some guy called the thing - a coffin with wings.

Some families are hurting right now. Their loved one were here on this side of that veil, and now they're gone.

May they R.I.P.

Did you really need the news to tell you this? 100% of accidents like this have lawsuits, whether they are legitimate or not is a different story.

I was just reading about the "impossible landing" of flight UA 232 last week (before this crash). I know there is no relation to this crash, but the engine breaking up and severing all hydraulics (and the fact that it was a DC-10, predecessor to MD-11) sort of made me think the crash may be of interest to people following along in this thread. It is a crazy story and such an impressive piloting feat. The whole wikipedia page is worth a read.

The FAA has just issued an Emergency Airworthiness Directive for MD-11 aircraft requiring aircraft inspections and any applicable corrective actions before further flight.
