re: What's more important: winning or how you play the game?

Winning... nobody remembers the effort a loser puts out. Nobody remembers that game from high school when you played hard... they remember that you either won or lost. That's why it is a stat in nearly EVERY competition (soccer with their ties)... winner or loser. That's what you are and that's what makes you.

all is fair in love and war and monopoly.

I've never lost a game of basketball with my friends and said well at least I played the game the right way.

How you play the game would be my answer but there are simply too many variables if they are mutually exclusive.
For example, pickup basketball. I could technically foul so hard when playing that it would knock out the other team's best players and force them to fill in with lesser players.
There is a balance that needs to taken into account that includes both winning and how you play the game.

Don't ruin it for everyone. We haven't been thrown out of Applebee's yet.

keeping score is now offensive to the losers so with no scores you have no losers so everyone wins, yay liberals saved the world from bad feelings
if we dont find a way to quickly take back the schools and fire every damn liberal administrator and liberal doctrine indoctrinating teacher there, there is no hope for this country. if it was done tomorrow it would still take a good 20 years to undo the damage caused by brainwashing minions of liberal idiot minions who worship socialism and think terrorists are the good guys.

Find me a great GOAT level team that didn’t have players that blurred the lines between legal and illegal or dirty and clean. You won’t be able to.
Great players make a living pushing the limits of their opponents and the refs.

I'm a golfer.
How you play the game is extremely important.
That said, when I play the game correctly, it usually leads to winning.

That's the problem right there. They aren't.

For argument's sake, let's consider the two to be mutually exclusive
They're not, though. Process is way more important than results. Because, in the end, the right process will yield consistent, desirable results.

"It's how you play the game" is a phrase used to make losers feel better about themselves

Well that's just not true if you're opponent is better than you at every facet of the game.

When kids start playing sports, the most important thing is learning the game. When you get to HS that's when they should really start to "play to win". It's about a team working as one to accomplish goals. The goal is to be the best as you can in order to be better than your opponent.
