re: Why are so many new vehicles off-roady when it appears that almost no one is off roading?

I drive a Tahoe. 330 days a year I would be fine in a sedan. But 35 days a year I am at the camp, pulling a trailer or jumping a curb to drive through a field at a party in the country. Sedan ain’t making it for that. But the Tahoe does all the sedan stuff. Which one would you pick?

The real question I find interesting: Are they selling because people independently want this stuff or have they been trained to want it?

My favorite are vehicles with snorkels. When we get street flooding in Houston 8” to 10” deep it is hilarious to watch people with snorkels hug the lane on the inside where the water is 2” deep. Or better yet… wait for an opening so they can avoid standing water puddles.

4WD is a waste of money until you need it. During the big winter storm of a couple of years ago I was able to get out and move around instead of being marooned for a week.

Agree, but I assume you also had red tow hooks which made the difference.

Probably the reason everyone wears cowboy hats and listens to country music all of a sudden. COVID made people go outside and being outdoorsy became the in thing.

Most for appearances. Unless you have a farm, some livestock, work construction, a GC or laborer. Although they’ve really gotten too tall in the bed for most people without a stool, step or ladder.
They do usually have higher round clearance and that’s good thing for many. And they usually have a higher payload if you happen to pull a boat, couple of 4x4’s, or a trailer.
But mostly the lower the testosterone the greater the need to hide it

Because it looks cool and people want to spend money on them.

That's the illusion of free will. Even when you think you "independently want" something, you've actually been trained/conditioned to want it by your life experience.

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
Why are there so many sedans with only 1 person in them?

As with most marketing, you are being sold a lifestyle fantasy, not the actual product.

Rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

They look cooler than the regular models.

I'm in the camp that uses it but buy what you want. Truck and SUVs with off road packages look better than their counterparts.
At this point vehicles are so damn expensive you should get what you like to look at at least.

Every time i've posted the truck tow/haul or 4x4 off-road use data people get butt hurt and downvote because they feel attacked.
Because you’re usually attacking their spending habits or buying preferences. You don’t offer it up as some unbiased insight. You’re usually doing it in an accusatory or confrontational manner to chastise their purchase. No one wants to hear that shite. Especially when they’re using their own money.
I have no idea why people buy “off road” or HD trucks. But I know they have the right to do so without having to justify it to you or anyone else. So yeah, their butthurt is kind of understandable.
