i have absolutely no doubt we had a number of troops in actual north vietnam at different points in time. but my point remains. we never actually launched an honest or serious invasion of the country specifically because we didnt want to escalate the conflict

We did not lose…… The South Vietnam Army lost it
fricking Johnson and McNamara lost it, by not Bombing Hanoi early.
Even General Giap Said” We kept waiting for the U S to bomb Hanoi Rt 1
B 52s would have stopped the war in one day.
Piss poor leadership
Unlike previous wars we would take a hill, a village a-banded it and two weeks later B C would be back
Dumb arse leadership

Why did the US lose the Vietnam War?
Politicians took over control and then ultimately just threw in the towel. The president gave it away.

In hindsight, it is almost unbelievable that a world super power like the United States could lose a war like that. What caused this to happen, in your opinion?
Rules of engagement. Korea was the first war where this came in to play and Vietnam was really bad. We had rules to not invade NV. We did not bomb strategic NV cities. We had rules of not pursuing VC into neighboring Laos. The list goes on.
It should be known that the US did not lose this war. We simply decided to disembark from a war the South Vietnamese could not sustain. In fact early on the the NVA were all but destroyed. It was the VC that carried the war on to its conclusion.

Not because of the military...

This. Exact same reason the US will never win another war.

Because politicians made too many decisions, and not generals.

Same reason the taliban controls Afghanistan after 20 years of war.

They wanted it more than we wanted it. We never should've been there.

You and West CoastAg have it essentially correct I can't improve on it.
For others, read "A Bright Shining Lie" for the complete answer.
USMC 0311
Nam 69/70
I hate McNamara to this day.

1. LBJ
2. Generals fighting a guerilla war using WWII strategy.
3. No clear vision of the end result.

US feared domino effect with communism.
Military-industrial-complex wanted war.
Created false flag to join war.
Policy makers didn’t understand what Vietnam was fighting for.
South Vietnam was rotten to the core with corruption.
North Vietnam was fighting for independence and used China and USSR under banner of communism to accomplish this.
US refuses to enter North Vietnam with significant forces, fearing repeat of Korean War.
US misdiagnoses NVA’s center of gravity. NVA correctly figures it can win a war of attrition.
US wins almost every battle but loses many young Americans in a pointless war, public is outraged.
US pulls out.
NVA runs over South Vietnam without US firepower.
That’s all there is

There's dozens of reasons. One reason was called McNamara's folly. Basically, the military drastically lowered its standards for more man power and a lot of low iq and physically inferior soldiers were able to serve on the front lines. It's vaguely similar to what the Democrats are doing now with the military.

Wasn’t fought to win, was entered to make $$$ for gov’t contractors/gov’t swampers

I’m really proud of my fellow Americans that understand this.

1. The failure to stop the supply chain of arms and men down the Ho Chi Minh trail. Yes, we did drops lots of bombs on them, but the supply chain still continued.
2.The effort to build and shape a nation and win a war was to much to ask our troops for. We should have just concentrated on winning the war.
3.The problems with our draft. Do you really want to try to win a war with lots of troops who did not want to be there?
There should have been zero deferments for young men in college. Everyone (outside medical and religious reasons) should have been eligible for the draft.
