Ah, the commercialization of the birth of our Christ. Sickening in that respect but I am nostalgic. Fond memories of my now gone folks and the magic and lore. These days I make a point of watching "The Homecoming: A Christmas Story", Walton's Christmas. Brings back so many memories and it's based on family values and the true meaning. I still "do" Christmas but it's not the same.

My condolences to all those that suffer from sad losses this time of year.
Honestly, I don't think this time of year should magnify any more than if it were in June. It really is no different.
This time of year highlights a sickness. People scream they don't have money and the economy is bad. Yet, going out and spending money you don't have for people that don't like what you got them is so trendy.
Christmas is not about Christ and all about Santa. That's reality. Think!

My parents would tell you that Christmas was a secular holiday and had nothing to do with Christ and that we could celebrate Christ everyday.
I grew up in a cult that forbids celebrating all holidays, birthdays, etc. I didn't wake up and get out until my mid-30s. I didn't start doing any holiday stuff until I met my wife. The first times I wrapped and opened presents, it was very awkward and I still felt like I was doing something wrong.
I'd never even had a birthday party until she planned a surprise at my fire station for my 40th.
We have a 3 year old daughter that loves the lights, and I find myself doing more around the house and ranch just to see her enjoy it. For the "it's commercialized and you're only doing it for the kids" crowd, so what. I've missed out on enough. My wife and kids don't have to miss out because I was raised in a brainwashing cult.

to the hardcore orthodox traditionalists yet among us-backs bowed, brows furrowed, stiff jointed, limping down straight paths worn deep over ages past by faithful sojourners before them. I admit I compromised years back and started doing my outdoor lighting on the Fourth Sunday in Advent and lighting it all up on Christmas Eve and turning everything off on Epiphany at midnight.
It’s disconcerting and discouraging -this rush to Christmas-mostly treating Thanksgiving as a bump in the road in route to the great secular mid-winter commercial festival.
I’m in KC with Mrs M visiting/helping our youngest daughter, son in law with newest grandson, our tenth.The KMart near us is essentially already out of Christmas stuff having what’s left on picked over discount shelves. Maybe more is on the way but it doesn’t seem so.

I grew up celebrating it, but my studies have led me to believe that it is a holiday with pagan roots that I should have nothing to do with. So my family no longer celebrates the holiday.

I was raised in a religion to believe that Christmas was pagan event.
I no longer am associated with that religion but I still see Christmas as just another day. Kinda like it that way. No big expectations to be let down.

Christmas gifts are for kids, not adults. Christmas shouldn't be an homage to consumerism.

So they picked a day of pagan celebration? A day nowhere near his actual birth? The Winter solstice has been recognized by numerous pagan cultures for a very long time before the Catholic Church decided to acknowledge the birth of Christ on THAT day in a gesture of compromise. This honors God?
How would your wife feel you celebrating her birthday 4 or 5 months after the real date on a former girlfriend's birthday?
One day you will get to tell Jesus why you did that.
