Males are hardwired to reject non-biological offspring. Step kids and adoption are relatively new phenomenons in society. If you have biological children, I would imagine your primal nature would remind you that yours and theirs are competing for finite resources.
Adoption is something that laid on many people's hearts, but I'm knowingly not cut out for it.
