This is a partial repost from the OT lounge. Though it might get more traction here.
We're staying at my parents house way out in the woods in WesternNC. Last night I hear two geart horned owls singing to each other down in the hollar.
So I had a bluetooth speaker with me and found a great horned owl call on YouTube. I managed to call them in within 50-75' of the back deck. Only the 2-3rd time in my life I've seen one in the wild. The big guy was ready to throw down!
Later I found out mated pairs sing to other like this and establish their territory. They lay their eggs in Mid Feb and the owlets hatch in mid-late March.
I was always interested in seeing if i could get 1 or 2 to move in on my or the adjoining land. I have read that a couple owls can keep the varmant situation under control which would in turn keep the snakes looking elsewhere.

Caught a pair with my Merlin app a few nights ago from my back porch. They were perched in a tree in my neighbor's yard. I usually get Barred Owls but this is the first time I was able to catch a Great Horned Owl.

They are gorgeous.
Here’s the first one I’ve ever seen.
Madras, Oregon before we chopped the tree down he was in.
It was early, he was about to go to sleep until power saws.

Had a mating pair in the tree line behind our house but hadn’t heard them in several weeks.
The kids enjoyed listening to them from our backyard. I hope they return.

I have seen 85 million owls in my life and still have yet to see a horned owl. Its getting rediculous.
One of my favorite experiences ever was a really close barred owl encounter. I was deer hunting in the swamp and I had stopped for a minute to look and listen, and an owl came land on a limb no more than 15 feet from my face. We stared at each other for a second, and I gave it a pretty sorry attempt of a "hoot." It turned its head sideways like a dog does, and then puffed itself up really big and let out a one of those obnoxious HA HA HA HA HA AHOOOO things they do. Leaned into it and everything, and then flew off. I about shite my pants.
When I die and get to talk to God, pretty early in the conversation im going to ask wtf was that owl doing and what was it thinking when I hooted at it. I hope I can relive that moment.

Because:

You were intruding on their territory masquerading as competition.

Duh. Back in the 1990's my roommate in grad school was an owl biologist. He would dub cassettes of owl playback calls. I got to listen to hours and hours of them. On the plus side, I can (or at least I used to be able to) do a pretty good screech owl imitation.
I don't think I ever went in the field with him tho. He stayed up late and I got up early.....

After not hearing from him for many years, I searched and found out he died from cancer this past year . :(

Saw my first 2 barn owls in Florida & out west this year, then my first great horned owl in Arizona. Just got a glimpse of him on the road then flying away, but the guy with me is more into bird watching than herping and he was quick with the id.

Walked in my backyard before sun up this am and heard an owl screeching at me in the moonlight.
Cam caught this owl about 2 hrs before I was walking around. Is that a great horned owl?
