Looking for advice for first “nice” rod and reel for my son

I put nice in quotes bc that’s def an opinion that may vary from one person to the next but I think these are nice.
So he is looking for inshore. Bass and specks/reds mainly. He wants an Okuma DTR for the rod and shimano curado bait caster for the reel. Think the rod is $120 and reel is $280 give or take. Any other rods and or reels to consider at this price point? Or more importantly are there others at a lower price point that are very comparable to the options I listed? TIA for any suggestions here.

I’m pretty sure you can get a curado for less than $280. It’s a great reel, and I don’t think you can go wrong with spending money on quality Shimano reels.

Definitely get a Shimano. You can find better prices. Bassboatcentral almost always has people selling new reels in the classified forum.

I have two DTR popping cork rods and like them alot. Puglias will have a sale on them every now and then. Curados are a solid reel. Another reel that runs around $200 is the Daiwa Coastal.

Curator D series for the reel is a good choice. Can find on sale for $200 if you wait for a deal. Falcon or St. Croix saltwater rods 7' or 7.5' paired with the Curado makes a good setup.

Way too much for that rig. Get a shimano reel, I probably have close to 80 or 90 rigs, and still have every shimano reel I have ever bought and all still working. For a rod I would go with a dobbyns or St Croix

A curado or scorpion, check eBay or Amazon as you can buy straight from Shimano. 200 bucks or so
Dobyns kayden 180, Falcons are great too. Everything is on sale rn. I just bought 4 150 dollar Avid tournament rods for little over 100 bucks total, Shimano spinning reels for 35 bucks etc

For $280 Curado, is he talking about the DC? That's about what those will cost but for a non DC model you can get for around $200.

You're right...nice is subjective. But can't go wrong with any type of Shimano reel.
As for rods, I'd recommend Waterloo. I think their entry "salinity" is around $160. Great rods and some of the best customer service in the game right now.

Curado SLX DC can be had for $199 it’s the ultimate “nice” Curado for younguns. Make sure correct action Rod and line for what he’s throwing that combo will last him 20 years. Good fishing.

Consider having a rod made for him.

Sportsman Warehouse I think. I bought two just to checked them out then bought two more. Told all my charter buddies but no one pulled triggers. (Their customers drop rod’s and reels all the time) They are gone now, so all the Shimanos, I missed the big sale

Why not just get him what he asked for? He seems to have good taste.

If using a bass reel for inshore check the website to make sure it's satlwater friendly but rinse it off with warm water a couple of times after each use regardless as well as the guides on the rod.
Can't go wrong with a Shimano, the Curado he's asking for is a DC reel at $280. Whatever he does do not submerge it in water or it'll fry the chip in it.
As far as rods I'll always recommend the Shimano Zodias 7'2 medium heavy for a "do it all" rod. It's as sensitive and light of a rod as you can get for under $200
I know tacklewarehouse does a 15% off sale around black Friday to help with the costs but they sell out quick when on sale. (past years they posted "exclusions" on brands like Shimano but when in the cart would be discounted).

Yep, nothing wrong with that if that's what he wants.
But if you want more of a value package. Abu Garcia stx reel for 200ish and a 7ft M Veritas rod for 120. That's my go to..
