Planting persimmons on deer land.

Early season the deer are all over the persimmons at our land in the delta. We don’t have a lot but if you want to see deer early season you can hang by the persimmons.
That got me thinking about planting more. I’ve done research online and know it is feasible in my area but just wanted to check with the OB if anyone had any tricks or tips related to such. Wasn’t sure if there were any easier or better alternatives that I wasn’t aware of.

I wish I had done that 30 years ago. I would do it if I were you

All I’ll say is that I would collect seeds from wild plants and grow those. With an exclusion cage to keep them from getting browsed or dug up by squirrels I’m sure you could propagate them. Most persimmons you’ll see at nurseries aren’t the native variety and the deer don’t like them as much. Got a massive tree someone planted years ago in one of our bigger plots that drops like crazy every year, but all that eats them are coyotes, so much so you can target coyotes on that stand in early season.

I’ve planted a few at my place.
I think 5. All but 1 is still growing. But it was only 3 years ago that they were planted.

takes 6-8 years for seedlings to fruit.
OP you can buy small seedlings online right now for cheap (like 20 bucks for 20) and plant them now. A tree tube is pretty much required until they get 3-4 feet high

Just remember, native persimmon is a dioecious tree. Only about 1/2 will be “female” trees and make fruit.
The trees from the nursery will all fruit.

There are some from nurseries that drop later in the fall.

If you are fairly young, I would plant some. I have a tree in my pasture and it produces a shitload every year. Every spring I mow down saplings that have come up from seeds thst drop in the fall. Be aware though, that they are hardwoods and take a long tome to grow to any size.

Plant some medlars too while you’re at it. Deer will feed on medlar fruit during gun season.

If you're anywhere close to Bussey Brake I'll give you all you want, just take a small spade and dig them up. Every pipeline on our place with have hundreds that are almost waist high in September.
