just hunt the fresh sign

Also don’t need a ton of extra weight while walking in/out. Everything I need fits in my pockets. No giant back pack with tons of extra gear/supplies.

Small headlight, pull up rope, wear my safety harness in/out, binos are on a harness that I wear also. Small but very sharp pocket knife in pocket and range finder in pocket. 50% of time I have my summit climber on my back. Other 50% is a small chair that I taped the legs so brush doesn’t make much noise when walking in.

Thats roughly what and how I walk in whether public or private.

I’m not familiar with Tunica and how the roads and parking is. But yes if someone beat me to a parking area and they aren’t there for me to ask which direction they are headed I normally just move on to another spot.

If I talk to them and they are going same area as me and they beat me to parking area I let them hunt it cause they beat me.

Very seldom does someone beat me to a parking area but it does happen.

If it's a new place, yes. Or I wait until squirrel season and do my scouting then. If I find something worth deer hunting I'll go back. The public I hunt in Mississippi I've been hunting for 10+ years so I go in with my bow/saddle to the trees that have produced in the past and hunt when I find sign.

download the maps so you can use them without service

mark everything on OnX

I mark every tree I've ever climbed, every scrape, every trail crossing, every acorn tree, etc

You will find patterns that you wouldn't otherwise find

Tree tacks or ribbon will show every lazy hunter where you are hunting, don’t use them.

In OnX you can download the area you are going to hunt before you lose service. That way when you are offline you can still use mapping/tracking.

I typically don’t scout before the season because it’s so hot and there’s no sign being laid down other than tracks. I still hunt the early season, but I really start scouting once it gets colder out and deer start making rubs and scrapes. With that said, I do all of my scouting midday. Don’t be that guy that pulls up in the parking area at day break and starts aimlessly walking through the woods, because chances are you’re going to walk up on somebody that’s been in his tree since well before sunrise. It happens, and yes it’s public land, but it’s a little annoying. Especially if you drove a couple hours just to hunt that morning.

I differ from others on scouting. I like to do in season scouting or like Loup said go squirrel hunting and make that a scouting mission. I want to know what and where the deer are doing/moving now.

Find oak trees that are dropping with tracks and poop under it and you are in the game. Then find another area then another etc.

Once you get comfortable with an area then expand a little. Don’t try to walk or feel like you have to explore every inch of the wma your 1st year. Break it up into sections and concentrate on 1 area and master that area. Once you figure that area out find another area that is similar and dive into it, may be able to use methods from previous spot to figure out quicker.

I know a guy that has property bordering it and he tags out every year(bow hunting). There is not adult gun season only muzzle loader. you can't hunt the youth weekend.

He doesn't go far off the trails due to poor health. as for orange you only need it for 12-13 days

Deer Archery (bucks only): Oct. 1-15 and Feb. 1-15

Deer Archery (either-sex): Oct. 16 - Jan. 31

Deer Youth (either-sex): Nov. 2-3

Do you recommend hiking boots for the terrain?

They have quite a few hiking trails with parking at the head. I usually walk those in a bit before going branching off. They should be visible on onx.

There's a link to the map on this page.

I don’t hunt it anymore but a few things I did that worked.
Hunt right next to a parking spot I mean if there is a thicket 75yds from the parking area hunt it.
Look for thickets that hold deer near a road but has no parking spot mark them with your GPS. You may have to walk along the road for 1/4 mile and will be hunting 100yds from a road but a lot of people don’t want to hunt near the road in “ugly shite”
Hunt hunters!! Let them push deer to you by hunting escape routes stay in the tree later most people will get down at 9.
Be prepared to see some of the dumbest shite you have ever seen.

I can’t stress this enough, but read the LDWF rules pamphlet. There are lot of rules that are different on WMAs compared to private property. Season dates are different. And if you’re looking at federal NWRs, those have their own pamphlets with different rules than WMAs and even from one NWR to the next.

Spend a little time reading so you don’t ruin a trip by ending it by getting ticket for a few hundred bucks.

And go spend some time walking the woods to scout and get a feel for the area. Hiking boots are all you need, and maybe some permethrin and deet this early in the season. Since the season is open, I would recommend going between around 9-10am until 2-3pm to minimize the odds of encroaching on a hunter already in his spot and so you have a chance to get a lay of the land in daylight before you have to walk in/out in the dark.

Large heavy thickets usually have a deer trail through the middle of them. Find a perpendicular way to get in.

I learned not to be bothered by other hunters, even if they walked by. I figured if the deer heard me getting into my stand they may have my area zeroed out of their walk zone. but if another hunter walks through it they really don't know its not me, so they hear him leave and I'm back in their safe zone. And heck, they may stir the deer up to my direction.
