Sheriff says Pointe Coupee Parish is 'overrun with black bears,' calls for change

Multiple black bears have been seen in the Pointe Coupee area recently, reflecting a trend that Sheriff René Thibodeaux says is concerning for the parish.

Thibodeaux said in the past month, black bears have been seen swimming in the False River in New Roads and roaming into city limits.

“Pointe Coupee is overrun with black bears,” Thibodeaux said.

While there have been many recent sightings, Thibodeaux said he has seen the animals traveling around the parish for years. Some have even been spotted in neighborhoods, which he says poses dangers to residents.

Hunting and habitat loss led to as few as 80 to 120 Louisiana black bears in the state by the 1950s, according to some estimates. The Endangered Species Act listed the animal as threatened and gave them a protected status in 1992.

On Monday, a Pointe Coupee sheriff's deputy found a kangaroo in a car while conducting a traffic stop. With wild hogs, alligators, black bears and now a kangaroo, Thibodeaux said the parish has "a little bit of everything."

No worries! State going to let 10 bears be killed this year! I saw 6 last weekend in a cut corn field in Tensas parish.

I support his message.

This 10 bear lottery is a money grab imo.

Yes the number of tags is low. It’s a start. Last year we had no chance at hunting black bears.

It’s government, they move at the speed of decades.

And supposedly only 1 of the 10 tags is going to be for public land. The other 9 will be private landowner tags. The WMA tag is non-transferrable but the landowner tags are.

I'm sure that nobody well connected politically will get drawn for one of those landowner tags that could be resold to the highest bidder

A big boar will destroy the sized bears we have.

Now, once a bear starts topping 300lbs, that's a different conversation

What is the purpose of reintroducing an animal that you can’t hunt, tears all your shite up, provides no benefit to the ecosystem, and that does nothing to control the population of any other animal? I hope those 10 guys gut shoot 10 a piece before they finally find one.

I’m across the river from pointe coupee and I have them in my garbage if I even throw a snickers wrapper on the outside trash can. I haven’t fed corn since last year and they still come shake my feeders daily.

I guess you could say this about humans.

I don't get the absolute hatred of bears by some people. So you have to modify your life a little. I'm glad we are bringing something back that our ancestors almost destroyed. Just like we did with deer.

I've got a good friend in Virginia and he kills monster deer every year on private and public property. They are completely covered with bear. It doesn't seem to bother them. He usually kills a big bear every year too. Of course, they don't put out 10 corn feeders all over their property.

Is "overrun", more or less than an "arse load" , how about a "bunch", how about "loaded to the gills", or "Phucking bears are everywhere", or "too many bears to count".
Seriously, Is it more than 10, more than 50, or more than 100 bears we are talking about, Overrun can be defined anyway you want.

How far west in Louisiana are black bears found? Are they an animal that will expand their territory further west like towards Texas? I hunt on toledo bend on the Texas side and was just curious if we would ever see them there in the future.

It’s not just Louisiana, I have 100 acres in Utica with 2 different bears on it on camera every single day. I quit feeding and everything, but they’re still always around.

I have personally seen one just south of Alexandria. I would imagine they have populated Dewey wills WMA pretty heavily by now.

“ I don’t get the absolute hatred of bears by some people”

I know a guy that could explain it to you.He has a camp on family land in Tensas.Bear broke window on his camp, climbed in and wrecked the interior .
Another guy I know is in a lease close to Montgomery. They’re overrun with wild hogs. They have a trap but can’t catch any because they have a resident bear that eats the bait in their hog trap.

There, have been only a few sightings in Grant parish besides the one in Montgomery but the farmers are dreading the day they get more.A bear can wreck a cornfield, they already have enough trouble with wild hogs.

I agree with latech15,I don’t see the purpose of reintroducing a pest animal..
Fricking gov’t bureaucrats decide we should have something they just do it with our tax money and could care less what the citizens want.
Haitians are another example.
