I've always been a casual follower of pro fishing and have fished all my life in small ponds.

so now my wife for some reason gets "Bassmaster" magazine at her office and reading it, seems like all the articles mention how FFS is going to change the game.

So what makes FFS so different than the old Humminbird "sonar" systems?

Boy that is a huge question and deserves a few paragraphs but FFS is just that. It is horizontal scanning. Where typical/Old school sonar looks down at a narrow angle, FFS looks out at a huge radius and for a long distance. Basically you can see and follow a fish that is 80 feet in front of your boat in life time. Almost like a camera. You can see a fish swimming on it and target it with high accuracy. Being able to watch them follow your offering
and adjust your retrieve to make them bite is just a massive thing

Also, you are looking at a wide scan so you can eliminate water quick and focus on areas that the fish are concentrated in. All without having to put your boat on top of them and make them nervous

It is way more than that but that is the crux of it.

For the past 30 years,, I lived and guided full time on a very deep clear lake where the fish suspended a lot. Being able to target those suspended fish accurately from a distance is just a huge technique.

I left there before it got going and never really had the opportunity to get going with it.

I won a bassmaster tour event on Lake Lanier in 2006 catching bit spotted bass out of 50 feet of water. I did that on a Lowrance LMS 102C. That is a 5" Color LCR with no GPS Triangulating off shore areas was my deal then working them on my color graph with no GPS and with a very skinny angle transducer. It was very different.

Big win for him. It'll probably take a while before he realizes what he actually did. He may be a little too young to soak that moment up but he did fantastic.

I am not a forward facing sonar hater. I actually like technology. I do, however, think it has changed bass fishing competitively in a negative way. I'm sure other devices have come along through the years that people have felt the same.

A kid won the bass master classic using forward facing sonar that was in dead last in the first two events that were on Lakes that did not suit forward facing sonar. It is a different style of Fishing just like top water or Jig fishing or finesse fishing. It's not going anywhere so I think we're going to constantly see the younger generation dominate using this technology. It is what it is.

We also saw the day 2 Leader completely spin out and look like a fish out of water once his sonar went down. Even though he had 28 pounds in the live well, he had no idea what to do once his forward facing sonar went down. It was a good look at what a lot of people are concerned about.

Either way, that technology is here just like other technology arrived in the past, and people are going to have to adjust or figure out another way to compete. Those guys are not trying to be versatile that use forward facing sonar, they are just capitalizing on the use of it every time they go on every lake and that makes them very good at it.

He seems like a great kid and I am sure he will represent bass fishing well. Watching him yesterday was fun, even though I am a old soul.

Amazing job...

Have you dipped into the 3D printing waters at all for baits? Seems like an interesting avenue

The place that pours all my lead products use a 3D printing system to create my masters/prototypes. Then they go from there to create physical masters once I approve them.

I’m sure there are more handy and more beneficial to people that are making crank baits and jerk baits. Most of my stuff is terminal tackle and doesn’t have the definition

Fished a tourney on Eufaula this weekend. There are those that know how to use FFS and those that don't. Top 5 all had 20+. Dramatic drop off after that. Either adapt or you are just donating money.

This is funny. I missed most of the coverage as we were fishing. I'll have to rewatch it.

This in and of itself is why I am against it.

Is there anyone out there that thinks either Easton or Trey would have even made the top 25 for the final day if not for FFS?

That is my beef with it.

Turn the screen off and they are left to their knowledge of bass fishing and not their knowledge of video gaming.

Do I think FFS has a place in recreational angling….yes

Does it have a place in the big tourneys, for practice days ONLY, in helping find concentrations of fish and narrowing down successful techniques….absolutely.

But watching these kids flip a bait 10 ft in front of their boat while never taking their eyes off the screen and catching 8 lbers? No sir, that’s not talent nor a valid display of fishing knowledge. It’s putting a video game on a boat and nothing more.

Rant off…

Kid wouldn’t have sniffed the classic period if weren’t for ffs!!

FFS is not fishing it’s catching. I think it’s a matter of time before lakes start banning ffs use just like some public lands are banning cell cams and cameras all together.

What I find so fascinating about BASS is their profound and intense hatred of MLF and all things Boyd Duckett. I really don’t get it.
