Were they really more dangerous than a motorcycle?
No, but people treat motorcycles as dangerous. The ATVs look "safe" so people let their children just hop on and ride the hell out of one. Or adults haul arse down the road on one with a beer in one hand an no helmet.
Then the ATV is blamed when they get hurt. If an untrained kid or a drunk idiot on a motorcycle gets hurt, the reaction is, "Well, what do you expect being such a dumbass on a dangerous vehicle." They don't blame the bike.

I wish I had a nickel for every time I flipped a big red. I would have a lot of nickels.

An uncle had a 200x, I still can see him kick starting that POS while in knee-deep water cussing while he got wet from the splashing.
My 1984 Honda 110 would crank on 1/2 pull, but that somb would ball up in that gumbo mud in a New York second.

still have my 185 and FIL's 200, fun to ride but unstable as hell if you aren't extremely careful, the cause of too many cuts, scrapes, bruises, and broken bones to remember...

That's tragic. I'm sorry you went through that.

Man that thing is in excellent shape! I'm pretty sure that is the tires from the factory.

Sure is. Ohtsu Pro/Am 501, and it even came with a spare stock tire and rim.

I used to be in a hunting club with a guy that was from New Orleans and he had a big red just like that one but it was in even better shape. It still had the little prickly mold marks on the tires. I guess living in the city it never got ridden except to the deer stand a few times a year.

Had a Hinda 110 and dad had a 250 ES. Eventually stripped out the axle on the ES and it became useless in mud until we welded it

I got ran over by a three wheeler back in the day. Good thing tire air pressure was low.
