I caught that part as well.
I'll bet the bears has something dead cached nearby.

I've been mauled by two alpha male dogs more than he got mauled by a fricking grizzly. This is bullshite IMO.

Vernon, how much did the hunter need to get chewed on by Griz to make him surviving ok? We never really know how we’ll react in a situation like this.

So are you saying people should not be allowed to hunt elk or deer in "grizzly country"? Or, are you saying you should shoot the elk and just leave it? Because you can't retrieve the dead animal without approaching it.
I'm assuming you are not a hunter and do not believe in hunting. Because I don't see how you could ever justify killing a deer that is minding it's own business in it's natural habitat. And certainly never killed a person. Does the fact that the bear is a predator animal make it more sacred to you?
If you are, in fact, not a hunter and don't believe in killing animals, then I get where you are coming from. But if you are a hunter, then I find it somewhat hypocritical for you to take this stance.
I heard a stand up comedian say one time, that he was a little surprised when he saw "Dolphin free tuna" on a can of tuna fish. He thought it was great for the dolphin, but what about the tuna??

The story is a little odd. Several strange things in there

If I have a 800lb bear running at me, you can bet your arse there would be a pile of casings a mile high. I'm emptying everything

The part I find off is how did he manage to hold on to/catch the horse? A grizzly pulls you off a horse that horse will be gone before you hit the ground no matter how well trained. No way you hold on to the reins with everything going on. I had a friend attacked on her horse by a pit bull. Pitt bull pulled her off her horse and the horse didn't stop till he got back to his stable. Both of them were messed up really bad so I can only imagine what damage a grizzly would do.

Someupdates to the story:
Story from Monday
“An investigation found a discharged can of bear spray with the safety off near the body,” Game and Fish officials said in a statement. “It was later determined that the sow (female bear) had been sprayed with bear spray.”
“The sow charged the team in an aggressive manner and was shot by Game and Fish personnel,” the Game and Fish notice said. “The yearling bear was chemically immobilized and determined to be involved in the attack of the victims. The yearling bear was then euthanized.”

The updates from Wy. Game and Fish would seem to dispute his position. He appears to have exited.

Why is bear spray even thing? A big caliber rifle or pistol is much better. If I have to choose to defend my life, its gun every time.

from what I've read, bear spray works.
I would imagine the guide didn't use the bear spray until it was a little too late.
Bear spray is a good deterrent if you are facing off with the bear and standing your ground, not if it has already charged at you and ripped you up. You're just pissing it off at that point.

He shot a round into the water at 8ft? Nope for me. I wouldve been on center mass there. I’d be so concerned that bear would stalk us going down the river.

It's pretty well established that bear spray is more effective than firearms. If you are going to spend any time in bear country you should have a look at the literature.
In my limited time spent around bears I carried a 2 inch 454 casull as a backup to bear spray. Not everyone carried a pistol but everyone carried bear spray.

the reality of the situation is that most people will be more able to defend themselves with bear spray than with a firearm. pepper spray does work but like anything else is not 100% effective...it doesn’t stop every rapist or mugger either.
the likelihood that in a split second life or death moment that most people will be able to deliver a kill shot with either a rifle or handgun is pretty low

Like most things in life, its by no means a guarantee.
All the details are not out, but if they had horses my guess is they were surprised by the bears and likely also surprised the bears. They likely were in thick brush and it happened without time to keep a distance on horseback.
I could see them gutting an elk in a bottom area with thick brush and the bear following the scent of the gutted elk and being on them in an instant. The bear had no idea there was another predator on the elk already, and simply was doing what a bear does naturally and fighting for a meal.
Given that, the proper use of bear spray is to essentially form a "wall" of pepper spray. Similar to using the PASS technique with a fire extinguisher. You spray a heavy barrier that the bear runs into, and hopefully is then deterred. Its not something you use if the bear is on you like a can of mace. At that point I don't think the bears really GAF and it probably makes them madder.
Injured game often run to water. One of the things to do in bear country is to try and bring the kill to dress it in an open area. With something as big as an elk that's usually difficult to impossible.

That was my thinking on my recent trip.
I expect I could keep my cool and stand my ground and make some good shots at the bear and hopefully kill it, but the reality is i'd shite my pants and would be shaking like Don Knotts in The Shakiest Gun in the West.
If a bear wants to run through a wall of bear spray to get you, it probably wasnt' going to stop from a few gunshots either unless you had a kill shot in there.
What's the smallest caliber ammunition that should be carried for bears? I was told a 9mm wouldn't do too much.

depends greatly on the bear...they are all individuals.
from the research i've done, and the experts i know, there is very little MOST PEOPLE can do about it if an angry grizzly wants you hurt or dead. thankfully grizzly bears have bigger fish to fry than actively stalking people
most common carry in bear country is 10MM are larger

In the right hands with the right ammo it would. An Alaskan guide killed a grizzly with his single stack 9mm. Sure you can use a 10mm or even 454 but if a bear is charging you, you could fire alot of shots hitting the bear with a 9mm vs very few shots on target with a big bore pistol.
But if a bear charges you in the woods from 10yards away, I dont think it matters what caliber you have anymore.
