What would most people probably key in on within the following paragraph?
“The president’s vitals over the last 24 hours were very concerning and the next 48 hours will be critical in terms of his care. We’re still not on a clear path to a full recovery.”
I'm going with “The president’s vitals over the last 24 hours were very concerning...." When you start talking about someone's "vitals" and especially reference "concerning," that sorta paints a dire picture.
Now maybe it's in there and I just didn't see it, but I'm not coming up with any mention of "concerning vitals" in the article.

Background is different than an unnamed source or at least it is supposed to be.
Background means it is a trusted person who is given real information but that information is not for public consumption. If there is someone legit behind this they should never trust that journo again.

Yes, the COS felt compelled to go to the press to note that it was the time that was concerning not the health of the elderly and overweight president who has contracted a virus that has been particularly harmful to people with those characteristics and who was put on supplementary oxygen because he was having trouble breathing and then admitted to the hospital.
I'd bet Trump and the folks who care about him are quite concerned about his health at the moment, but you do you.
