I'm 60. I can remember when politicians voted with the interests of what they ran on. It didn't matter which party they were in.
And I can damn sure remember when they voted in the greater interest in our country

Started following politics in the mid seventies. For the most part the msm has always leaned left. The difference now is they will go out of their way to lie and even cover up crimes committed by the left. My father despised Sam Donaldson, today Sam would be labeled a right wing extremist. Also back then receiving government assistance was something most were ashamed of . Now we have generations addicted to the government tit and feel entitled to other people's money.

I think the left likes to present like this.
The right is most certainly more violent given a good reason. This I’m 100% of.

Honestly it really wasn't bad until the 2000 election. Before you could see pubs and dems work together.
The clinton impeachment was a rift but the 2000 election caused a huge divide. Then things got better after 911 then worse after Iraq.
Then 2016 you had another close election with the EC and not popular vote deciding president. So the other side cranked up opposition. Then it swung back so the other side called foul. Then it swung back again and here we are.
But no in the 80s and 90s it was not this bad.
Though social media and everyone being able to share opinions stop broadly also played a major role.

a major problem i find is how people on both extremes get monetarily rewarded for saying toxic stuff on both ends
Now sure, this dynamic has always existed, but the monetary gains were confined to the small # of legacy media outlets shilling their respective parties' propaganda.
Present though, anyone can create an X account, get verified, and just start spewing out extremely vile and divisive garbage and make money of it via engagement and impressions . The middle ground and sensible takes dont get nearly as much traction is the pure insane and extreme ones.
tl:dr there is a lot of money to be made with political toxicity and its no longer confined to just legacy media outlets

It’s always been a toxic shite show behind closed doors I guess, but social media seems to have turned it into a sports culture extreme with people actively rooting for their side and cheering for the absolute destruction of the other. I guess pro wrestling is the better analogy. Cowboy Bill Watts would be envious of the kayfabe politics has been able to pull off worldwide and the amount of people bought into the story and supporting their favorite.

The right is hyperbolic too, but it's usually in response to actions of the left.
For example, "we're about to be taken over by sharia law!" is hyperbolic. It's also the product of absurdity - the importation of Muslims to America for no real reason (in many cases).
The reality is that the exaggeration of the right is usually rooted in some degree of truth ("the notion of the family is collapsing!") while the left's hyperbole is often invented from nothing and then grown into some gargantuan thing.

Has politics always been this toxic?
now that Trump is fighting back all of a sudden its 'toxic politics' because the Left, as usual, gets more shrill and evil when they're called out on their lies.

Question for the older crowd
Define "older crowd"?
I'm in my mid 40s and politics has been pretty damn toxic since the 90s when I started paying attention. It's certainly more prominent now, but that has changed because of internet, social media and just overall societal changes. It also doesn't help that the Greatest Generation built us a very comfortable nation in which to live, and a majority of people alive within it have never faced any real struggles.
For example, look around the protests happening around the country. Mostly wypipo that likely never had the experience of wondering if they would eat on any particular day, and their biggest struggle in life may well have been choosing whether to cut out a trip to Starbucks or let the Netflix bill lapse for a week.
People today are fricking WEAK and have NEVER faced any real adversity. So whatever the media tells them is "injustice", they just fall in line to oppose it because they have no real fight in their personal lives. If you're conditioned and programmed to be simultaneously a perpetual victim and a potential savior, it creates a bizarre dichotomy that doesn't have any space for logic.

They used to duel at the White House. If someone challenged you to a duel and you declined, you were stripped of your position and rank in the community.

No, America used to be of the same culture. The globalists have been playing with ant piles for about 40 years now.

Well the 1960s was pretty violent with respect to politics.
But then the rise of Rush Limbaugh radio show and the rise of 24/7 cable news really amplified the angst and demonization of people who disagreed with you politically.

I remember it starting with GWBush. I don't recall any "He's literally Hitler" bullshite before him.

In the style it is now, it started with GWB by the left. And has continued on ever since.
Ironically, GWB is now a good man by the left after the ratcheting up the hate from 2000-08.

Counterpoint to the idea that dueling/fighting/etc. made it more toxic:
I think even those eras, you may not have dehumanized your opponents like you do now. I certainly don't think there was nearly as much "crowd goes wild" over dust ups and gentlemanly score settling then as now.
I'm not convinced this is more toxic, but I don't know that duels, etc. are conclusive on that front.

Are you saying killing someone is not as demeaning as harsh words?
Posted on 1/8/26 at 11:13 am to Rankest
NO. Democrats calling on defunding police and to kill federal law enforcement agents is a new outright marxist thing. They are mad because they rule like maduro their comrade.

No because the only message you could get was from the propaganda fake news, I used to think CNN was legit.
It's gone nuts since Elon opened twitter up so the truth has been exposed.
The entire system (both sides) is corrupt AF but Trump will fix some of it.
We are going through a big change
