What if I told you that you could solve the problem without spending billions and increasing the size and scope of gov't?
End the War on Drugs. End social welfare programs. Make it easy for people to get work visas.
Problem solved. Sorry you are so dependent on the gov't that you look to them for every solution.

I have gone to the tourist areas as well as a few other areas that are not known as tourist destinations and never felt threatened. I was last there a year ago but used to go every 3 months for business and some in between for personal. I never thought about it because I simply stayed away from dangerous areas.
It's really not that hard.

Most of the really bad areas are within 200 miles of the US border (where the cartels are fighting for control of shipping lanes for drugs and immigrants), as well as Acapulco.

Religion had nothing to do with this. The Cartel knew who these people were. They had been living in Mexico for years, after the LDS Church banned polygamy. There are pockets of polygamous communities living in Northern Mexico near the border.
