you aren’t taxed enough! Let’s project how rich you might be in the future, and tax it now(thereby ensuring that you will never actually enrich yourself to the projection)

And with that, anyone who can move out of the Netherlands will do so.

It hasn't passed in the Senate yet

People are talking about this as if it is codified into law. It's not. And I don't care if it does get codified into law because it's Norway and not the US

So the point is to plunder. Obviously.

Okay, first I have to say that I am STRONGLY against any tax like this.

But making a massive stretch to be objective; the only way that might be excusable at all is if they are closing the loophole where unrealized gains on shares are used to collateralize loans. That's a popular mechanism that the ultra rich use to avoid paying any tax at all.

That is the one and only scenario where it may not be completely unjustifiable. But also frick that, it's way too slippery of a slope to even consider. 5 years later they'll be raiding everyones 401k and IRAs.

Have no doubt. If democrats get enough of a majority and the White House again, taxes on unrealized gains IS going to be attempted.

If you will remember, the last democrat nominee for president was for it.

Norway and the Netherlands are not the same.

Also, per the article, the same party has majority in the Dutch House and Senate so it is expected to pass.

36%?

LULZ

So they force people to pull money out of the market (or alternatively use wages) to pay their taxes on unrealized capital gains at a tax rate that demands market growth exceeds a rate that doesn't result in a net loss for the taxpayer.

Holy shite. They may as well build an economy on tulips.

After reading the article, it looks like parliament was just throwing a half baked law out there because the prior law had been declared unconstitutional and needed a quick replacement.

I wouldn't be surprised if this one gets declared unconstitutional as well. The old law was basically declared unconstitutional for "assumed income" and this is very similar. The new law is just a semantic difference that the courts are just going to say "this is the same shite we nixed before".

Has he heard of property taxes?
I'm confident that the "pawpaw" mentioned was not talking about living in some city somewhere. He was talking about land out in the country where you don't have issues with your neighbors, cause you can't see or hear them. (If you have trouble with your neighbors, you didn't buy enough land). I own 109 acres. The property tax on my house and all my land is less than $1200 a year. That's the price of one calf at the sale barn. I sold 22 last year.

My ole pawpaw said don't keep your money in a 401k, use it to buy land. Somebody's gonna pillage that pile of money one day, and land is one thing that we aren't likely to start printing more of.

What’s to stop someone from taxing unrealized gains on that asset?

Well this answers the question of "What does a leftist do when they run out of other people's money to steal?"

They simply start stealing the money you don't have yet.

Sending you a bill for the tax and actually collecting the tax on that land would be 2 entirely different things. Something tells me that when the "tax man" showed up, he'd soon be introduced to a 45-70

If I recall correctly, the Clinton floated something along these lines back when he was President.

Taxing the gain on your house IF you were to sell it today. Not if you sold it, but simply what you could have sell it for if you were to sell it. Didn't get too far, obviously... but they've been at least thinking about this for quite some time.

Also, if there is a tax for unrealized gains, do you also get to take unrealized losses?
