This model is used in Finland (who has an amazing education system). Students that are going into trades and such are in a completely different set of classes that those that are going on to college. I wrote a paper over this when getting my masters.

I still remember my guidance counselor telling 16 year old me that those jobs won't always be there. Some people should not be educators.

Parents should be raising their kids and directing their steps, not government-run schools. If the parents want to work with the schools and use them as a tool to help direct their kids, sure. But, government-run schools shouldn't be the one's directing their steps. That's a parents' job.

My $.02 is that starting at the sophomore or junior level, there should be a class introduced that goes over the fundamentals about the costs of post high school education, the efforts to get into different career paths, the incomes each career path earns beginning, on average, and on the high end. Then demonstrate how your decisions after high school affect your life for as long as you've been alive at that point.

Colleges have sold students the dream of earning 6 figures out of the gate and that just isn't an option for 90 to 95% of the degree plans they offer.

Their job is to teach kids shite.

Career discussions are for parents.

For the last 40 years, the mantra has been "everyone should go to college"

Clearly, the proliferation of useless degrees - or of degrees in fields that are destined for the ashbin because of AI - shows that isn't the case, and won't be in the future.

Should schools be telling students to consider trades?

Should "shop" class be brought back?
Home economics?

This is true now, but it was always true. There have always been people who had no business in college. And much of high school is wasted on college prep classes.

I know. $35k after 15 years, but that's my money. I don't want to just give it to them.

High schools should focus less on preparing everyone for the same future, and focus more on preparing each person for the things they are individually more suited for.

Home economics?

When my son was in HS he found out that the Home Ec class was 90% girls. He signed up immediately.

Public schools should absolutely require kids to take a financial math or even accounting course rather than trig or geometry or any other arbitrary math that they will never use unless they plan on taking an engineering route or something similar.

This year, Georgia started requiring high school graduates to take a financial literacy class to graduate.

They should. One of the things that is problematic is the high schools themselves. In LA the Tops Tech program is a joke. Maybe you get an actual welding course for a semester. Also the efficacy of the programs at the different trade schools like Northshore Tech and other places is.......wanting

No. Plumbers and electricians will be subject to the whims of the poli-sci and middle eastern nutjobs.

The most retarded thing republicans or conservatives can do is encourage talented and capable to go into the trades.

People in the trades have no power at all in the United states.

I absolutely despise this deceitful boomer messaging. In fact, stop listening to any boomer, nearly every view or perspective they have about the world is 50 years out of date.

With a really robust and sound welfare state then people will be more inclined towards jobs that are considered "lower status".

The only dumbasses in this thread suggesting trades for American youths are boomers who simply have no clue about anything anymore genuinely too far removed to understand where the trades are.

Do not listen to boomers.

You cannot be serious. You dont think electricians have to go into attics to run wire? Are you delusional? Know how I know you dont know what you're talking about?

That is not what I am saying. At all.

There are people that do not belong in college. Period.

There are also people obtaining worthless degrees or degrees in areas that are destined for obsolescence (and soon) because of AI.

That is what I am talking about.

True. Do high schools still teach Industrial Arts, Small Engine Repair, and Power Mechanics (auto shop) any more?
