Do you think that will become the new normal where are you just sit in your car for a couple of hours while your batteries charge

it's only 30 minutes. 15 with the supercharge subscription if i'm not mistaken. it's only going to get better. probably within 5 years.

Maybe a stupid question, but currently do you have to pay at these charging stations or just hook up for free? I saw a car charging at Whole Foods the other day in Houston and wondered about that. I have no idea how that works.

Depends some of them are free. If you are using Tesla superchargers it will be free for cars sold prior to 2017. Post 2017 you will pay a small fee. Usually it is $5-$8 for about 300 miles of range. If you charge at non Tesla chargers they charge your credit card at fixed rates but is usually around a few dollars for an 80% charge.

I would guess that more people don’t fill up all the way. Constantly seeing people putting $10 of gas in

If you know anything about batteries the answer to this question is obvious. Batteries charge fast up to around 80% of charge. The closer you get to 100% the slower the charging gets due to heat and other factors. It the same way your phone charges you reduce charging at 80% to preserve battery life and longevity.

What's the fuel surcharge on that? Like on my home electric bill.

I guess that went over your head.

The circle jerk against electric cars is akin to every group that dismisses a paradigm shift in technology.

And for the people who think they are getting something by using a battery car like saving gas money or not polluting that will only be temporary. Once more of these things are on the road the cost to charge at these stations will go up as demand for more electricity increases. Then they will fire up the coal plants even harder to polluting the world twice as much to keep up with the green retards. When all they had to do is keep making advancements in emissions with ICE. ICE cars make more power now than ever with 10 times stricter emission standards, this green EV bullshite is nothing more than a money scheme for the govt. I'm all for technology advancement but choice is why we live in america.

Let alone when the reliability of the chargers means several are out of order at any given time. Look at air machines in gas stations now.

You may be on to something there. Cuba for decades relied on Russia for cheap fuel, when the USSR collapsed Cuba went through what they called "the dark period" (pun intended I guess). Then Chavez came along in Venezuela and through PetroCaribe he not only offered Cuba cheap gas, but also excess oil to refine and sell on the open market for a profit. Now with him gone they are experiencing another dark period.

Want to see communism/socialism at work. Visit Cuba, while there are no lines for gas at the gas stations (because there is no fuel and even if there was you would not have a rationing card.....however, the lines at the air pumps are quite long....while people fill their bicycle tires.

It seems to me there are several issues with EVs. Batteries don’t last that long in everything else so I assume this is no different. That is going to deter people who buy cars infrequently unless replacement batteries come way down in price. 20 minutes is way too long once a lot of these are on the road and you have to wait in line for your turn at the charging station. I imagine adding additional loads like towing kill range. If and when a large portion of the population transitions to EVs the cost at charging stations will go up, government taxes will go up on electricity, and at the end of it all it will cost just as much or more to travel per mile.
So, what is the benefit of the EV? Why would I want one over an ICE? If this isn’t super clear to most people the EV will never be more than a niche product.

I refuse to believe my electric car sitting out in Minnesota in January is going to run perfectly with no battery issues. If so the techs have figured something out nobody else has.

I’m also curious about low battery. When my car says low fuel I have 25 miles at a minimum. When my phone says low battery it drains much faster. Think the car will be better? More consistent?

All of this will improve but will be more costly and more time consuming.

Even with all that I’d consider a Tesla if it was affordable for local driving. It’s not affordable and it’s time and energy intensive

Very dramatic. It takes like 20 mins for 80% charge.
Send a couple emails, make a phone call, text a friend, watch a Facebook video. It’s not a deal and may actually be a decent rest break for long trips.

20 minutes sounds light...

Charging at Superchargers – Charging at a Tesla Supercharger while on the road usually takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, or sometimes a little more depending on the charger and the vehicle.

In a charging station, you get to charge a maximum of 120 kW per car, and with this, it will take around 20 minutes to charge to 50% and one and a half hours to charge the tesla to 100%

Are you retarded? Because you sound retarded. 20 minutes to “fuel up”... laughable.

Why haven’t they figured out how to harness solar power to keep the batteries charged?

but stopping every couple hours for 30 minutes isn’t that bad,

I have driven cross country East to West 4 times and North to South twice. I would have done none of that if required to stop to charge for that length of time. Thus I would have missed seeing most of our great country.

Sounds like a very shitty trade off.

Interesting because I was talking to my friend and I think they are putting chargers into sails for boats

I don't get the hate for Tesla on this board. Elon is a patriot.

I've done it a lot of times. Driving an electric vehicle cross country and stopping for charging, would cost you an extra day in each direction. From Birmingham to Detroit, probably an extra hour and a half.

A lot of posters here are fat, mid-50s suburban types who believe that driving a huge pickup truck makes them a patriot, and that any interest a cultural artform outside of drinking beer and watching professional sports is ghey.

They probably will one day - roof of the car will have a solar panel layer or something along those lines.

It won't increase your battery's charge while you're driving, though, it will just slow the rate of running the battery down and could extend the range a bit. You'd need too large a solar panel to drive your car indefinitely without stopping to charge. I'm sure some engineer has done what should be the relatively simple calculations already. Extra weight from the solar panels vs. the rate of charge, and cost to manufacture, etc.
