NOLA 100% has more dangerous areas than 30 years ago.
That had a lot to do with dismantling the projects.
No one area of the city is as bad now as most of them used to be.
That had sort of a good and bad effect, I guess I'd argue. Probably a bit more good.

I guess my question is what percentage of cities AREN'T nicer and safer than they were 30 or 40 years ago? Maybe 5 percent?
lol

How about Detroit?
Indianapolis is worse.
Indianapolis is worse.

Ellick,Monroe & Shreveport are shells of their 25 yr old selves.
Haven’t figured out why.
monroe used to be a proper town
we had Festus as the grand marshall of christmas parades, Elvis at the Civic Center and a run of mayors who genuinely cared about the city and made it better.
nothing like a cold dark winter night, going to the Palace downtown with my dad to buy my mom something special for christmas or playing the atari 2600 for 2 straight hours at the sears on louisville waiting for my mom & dad to quit shopping for window AC units.

Many American cities are violent. Keep your head, not your hips, on a swivel.

It spread them out more. It's more dangerous over a larger area now.
You used to know the absolute no go zones. Now it's a crapshoot in Orleans Parish.

Louisiana has definitely bucked the smaller/smallish city upswing trend.

Yeah you are right, we should definitely disregard FBI because of your own politics. Truly heady stuff here bud.

He doesn't know about the change in reporting guidelines and the non-reporting policy POTATUS and Jug Ears adopted.

you think New Orleans is more dangerous now than it was in the 90’s? Are you high?
I don’t think in the touristy areas it’s more dangerous. It’s policed way better than I remember it being growing up there. I do think the ghettos are worse. I think in the 90s crime was spread all over the city, now the touristy areas are much better protected. A lot of NO has been gentrified also. Again, I just simply think the ghettos are worse. The alpha black dads back in the day use to demand people in their hood act right. Those dads don’t exist much anymore. If they do, the don’t live in ghettos.
Eta: I moved to Shreveport after HS.

Uptown safe areas have shrunk...by a lot.

You realize that the data shows a decreasing trend regardless of this, right? Truly sounds like someone who knows the topic deeply. They really aren't sending their best.

DC is a mess.
The videos of the kids wilding out in the streets are all over social media.
It’s car break ins, muggings, ominous people loitering and a general lawless vibe like I felt pre Super Bowl in New Orleans.
I was tempted to add Chicago but during my visit last winter granted only to the nicest areas I never once felt unsafe and I didn’t even see much in the way of homelessness or panhandling.
I don’t judge towns when they have bad neighborhoods, that’s basically every town if you go looking.
I judge places when they let their crime splash into the nicer areas and you see trash and other signs of decline in areas where there shouldn’t be any.

Atlanta has nice pockets and the suburbs are nice, I lived in woodstock for a while and its great but it is objectively a shithole overall in the city.
And that's the thing. I'm sure even Detroit has one or two really nice suburbs still but it's the overall package you have to look at.

Maybe I"m wrong and have it backwards then. I'm in my 50s and moved when I was 18. Born and lived there until I graduated HS. My sister kept my parents old house b/c they also moved. Her last 2 years living there her house was broken into 6 times. Her and husband got to the point where they left windows down in cars and kept it cleaned out due to break-ins. BIL works offshore and back then she worked nights as a nurse. Her coworker next block over started having many problems and had to move. My aunt still lives in NO but in a nicer area and has been having many problems over last 5-10 years that she never had. Maybe crime is down, but the hood has spread out more in the use to be good areas.
I still visit 1-2 times a year for Saints games but I"m just an out of town tourist now.
