So a 60 year property developer just found out how much property taxes he owes? He wouldn’t be much of a developer if he just learned how much he owes would he and I think even you leftists have to think he knows everything about property. Sure sounds like the beginning of a conversation about things to me such as how to get away from paying taxes yearly on something you bought with money you already paid taxes on

This would cement Trump as the greatest leader in the country's history.

Americans can finally own, really own, their property.

This would have such a massive effect. States and local governments use property taxes as a way to increase revenue (money taken from public via forced taxation) without having to pass a vote.

I don’t think renters should be charged property tax

Renters are already paying property taxes, just as they are paying for repairs and the cost to build the home. It’s in the rent they are charged.

I’m all in and for it. But my little town is mostly funded by property taxes. We have the second highest millage rate in Alabama. In the early ‘70’s it got passed to fund our own school system and get out of the county system. Then a federal judge said “No” but the rate never got changed back. The city started to shift demographics in the ‘90’s and accelerated by the tornado in “11. Now, we have a huge multi million dollar new high school and about 8-10 busses bringing kids in from surrounding communities. Very few local kids. I have to say, the city has been well run as far as services, etc. to this point. Elections in August will just about complete the transition and……….well, we’ll see. I don’t see property taxes really ever going away but if they do our new leadership will have to get creative.

I mean, I wish it could be true, but property tax is a state function, not a federal function

I was hoping someone would point this out on the first page. Trump can rage bait all he wants about removing property taxes, but it's not his call. Now Federal Income Taxes is something he can work to eliminate, and should be, every single day.

So its dumb for nearly everyone to have skin in the game? Right now its only property/home owners.

Recurring property tax = tax the rich in disguise.

Not a fan of property taxes by any means but this is a State issue and has nothing to do with FedGov….

Change it at the State level…

Why am I punished for “owning” property by having to pay for libraries, schools, and mosquito abatement while they get off scot free?

Like the school I pay a property tax assessment on and if I had school age children they would even be able to attend that school because we live out of the zone for it. Now this sucks.

I don't understand how people who call themselves small government conservatives could be for the federal government dictating how the states conduct their tax affairs. I want less federal control of local governments, not more.

At the very least, only allow people who actually own property to vote in property tax elections. Allowing those to vote who have no skin in the game is no different than allowing a Florida resident to vote in Georgia.

Counties in Mississippi are funded entirely by property taxes. That includes license plates.

The sales tax would have to double to make up the difference
