He beat Hillary.
He also assumed that people like Fauci are experts, when in reality they are nothing more than government bureaucrats who may have MDs or PhDs, but definitely have an agenda.

Most of it is just perception. Let's face it...as a brash New Yorker, Trump has never exuded empathy. I'm not saying he should have had a mask mandate, but he certainly could have shown a little more leadership and not allowed Biden and Democrats to turn a mask into a political weapon. And having a super spreader event in the Rose Garden with hardly a mask in sight didn't help with regard to perception.
I'm not talking his die-hard supporters or most Republicans. He has their vote, and he was never going to lose them. I'm talking about the tiny sliver of the electorate in maybe 6 states that could go either way.

Fauci got away from Trump. Once he bucked Trump a few times, the media sought him out and Trump could only do so much the muzzle him without appearing to be covering things up.
Trumps biggest mistake was not hammering home a more comprehensive posture with this response. It was too medical in nature, when it should have been equal parts medical, economic, and social. ALL of those voices should have been front and center.

quote:I agree with this. Fauci et al are career government bureaucrats, not experts. Experts typically work in the private sector.
He trusted the experts. THAT is what he did wrong. The experts failed him catastrophically. First the CDC. Then the FDA.

The Dem strategy has nothing to do with policy or logic. It's pure emotional appeal to primal fear. They are scaring non thinking women and older men with a simple message:
'If you vote for Trump you're going to die of the plague.'
This will work with more people than you realize.

Right. They won't articulate their plan because they don't have one.
Trump should ask, very pointedly, "If the dems have a better plan, why are they sitting back as folks die and not share that wisdom?"

He had to tell people to take it seriously and ensure the whole country (not just red states) that they had his support.
Results:
We politicized basic safety measures and now have people treating washing their hands and wearing a mask in public places like its communism.
We have democratic governors left with no choice but to placate to the lowest common denominator. Politicized again through public condemnation and ridicule.
On top of all this, we continue to be told of hoax treatments and that everything is under control. It’s a vicious cycle shite show.

Hindsight being perfect.. he should've used the insurrection act as soon as the first Democrat governor started forcing covid19 patients into nursing homes.

You could have picked any world leader and plugged them into the presidency and not done better.
There is no magic answer. Every world leader was guessing on the best strategy and if one turned out well it was due to luck, not skill.

What Has Trump Done Wrong Re: Covid?
My opinion on this is pretty simple, as is my opinion for Trump's "failure".
It comes down to his sentiment and attitude. He's made a large, vocal portion of the population (his base) think COVID is basically a bad cold. Had he encouraged people to do what they can to mitigate the risk of spread (mask, social distance), I think much more of the country as a whole would have a different attitude on it.
It may or may not have actually helped in the spread, who knows (it certainly wouldn't have hurt). But in the eyes of the media at least we as a country would seem united in the fight against COVID. Because now we most certainly do not.

Trump has refused to wave his magic wand and made covid just disappear. How heartless.

nothing. handled it was well as could be expected.
inflated number of deaths are the number of deaths they would have had if everything was handled "perfectly" according to Dr. Birx in March.

I think that for the first four months he was getting a barrage of conflicting predictions from the "science" experts.
I know I lost confidence in Fauci's prognostications when he reversed himself several times. starting with - "no air transmission, worry about surfaces."

Exactly what I said. Just being a little more of a unifying voice

I think he should’ve told the CDC “frick you” and kept us open.
But that’s easier in hindsight than foresight.
He trusted Public Health people. And they should almost never be trusted.

Experts screwed up in two ways that I can think of.
1. Caving on the protests. Not saying that mass protests where thousands of people take to the street and riot was a bad idea, was a bad idea. Of course it spreads virus. Large numbers shoulder to shoulder and face to face with cops. Tear gas that causes people to “ leak”? Cough, spit, nose to run, tears.
2. Flipping this from control the spread to control the virus all together. The only goal that is achievable is to suppress spread and surges to not overwhelm our HC system. While New York looked awful and El Paso looks bad now, they are areas. Areas where extra resources can be mobilized tent hospitals. Navy hospital ships to areas with a coast/shore. To have this occur in every large city in the country would be a catastrophe. Playing “whack a mole” is frustrating but far better than every mole popped up at once and your mallet is falling apart.
The switch to talk of eradication is a goal that is not achievable. Not in the near future. And our steps to protect hospitals has just made this thing drag out and have no season. Like the flu.
Trumps screw up is the same as always. The tweets and his mouth. Can’t parade people out there with you and immediately undermine them with rid bits gobbled up by the press.
