Robb, why do you think President Trump went out of his way to dismiss Machado?

I don't think thats the goal, although it would be the best outcome.
We just want Venezuela folks to have a fair opportunity to vote for their choice of leadership without corruption and intimidation.
Why is this so hard for folks to understand????

Thanks Special K. That's a good representation of what appears to have happened.
They have had several months to plan for this. I'm surprised they weren't prepared with a transition team.
Is there an advantage to leaving the old regime in charge? If so, for how long?

The question should be - when do we STOP running Venezuela

I think Trump thinks Europe controls the Nobel prize chick.
Rubio supposedly has spoken to the VP today and I guess Rubio thought he could get what he wanted there. Also we do not want to be seen as installing a regime. They can hold an election once things settle down and choose their own leader.

There is a chance, at least, that this was a case of "Trump speak" or whatever you want to call it: where he says something that is hyperbolic/embellished or just straight off the cuff without being part of the plan.

Thanks, I hadn't heard that...it would make sense.

So attempting to have a vassal state?

Maybe that's the reason we're not in any hurry to install a transition government.

María Corina Machado has been setting up a government in exile after Maduro rigged the prior elections.

That's what I understood. AND she dedicated her Nobel Prize to President Trump.
So, why do you think President Trump ruled her out as being part of the new government?

They're allowing the VP to step into the role with assurances she will cooperate with the US. I like it so long as she plays ball. Keeps our hands somewhat clean in the sense that we aren't just installing one of our own guys. Meanwhile there is a panel of people being designated to oversee and guide the new government through the reconstruction process.

Always a chance of that, Jim...but to what are you referring? Rubio's supposed phone call with Maduro’s replacement/VP or the dismissal of Machado as a viable leader of Venezuela?

Because he said so. She's a globalist plant apparently.

Here's what President Trump said:
??? Trump’s Comments on Machado’s Role
He suggested she was not a viable leader for any post-Maduro government, saying something like:
“I think it would be very tough for her to be the leader. She doesn’t have the support within or the respect within the country.” ?
Gulf News
He also emphasized that the U.S. was working instead with Venezuela’s vice president (Delcy Rodríguez) and not positioning Machado as the next head of state. ?

It is just difficult to believe that the U.S. will be "running" the country. Right now we have no presence there, right?
In order to run a country a country as large as Venezuela we are going to need lots of people, not just troops, but those will be needed as well. We are also going to need lots of money - even if the plan would be for Venezuelan oil to eventually pay for it. Congress has appropriated nothing, and I don't see them as likely to approve much or anything.
On the other hand, I also do not think we are just going to let a person within Maduro's circle just run the country and risk it essentially being unchanged. But that does not necessarily mean we would have to run the country.

That was the weird thing. President Trump emphasized that the opposition leader and Nobel Prize winner was NOT being considered for being part of the new government.
If Trump appointed María Corina Machado as president she would look like a US puppet. She needs to be elected in the first legitimately held election to be free of the US Puppet label.
