It makes no sense in this country outside of a handful of urban corridors

because we have Silverado's, F-150's, and Tundras. we don't need a limp wristed rail.
You wouldn't even get to see the train nutz at such high speeds anyway

No, we’re trying to save taxpayer money—not waste it on worthless trains.

Here's why:

Building one mile of railroad track typically costs between $1 million and $2 million depending on the terrain, location, and complexity of the project, with simpler rural areas on the lower end and urban areas with significant infrastructure needs costing significantly more.
You have to remember that every European country is considerable smaller in size than we are. For instance, Germany is half the size of Texas. Those countries are doable for high speed rail. We're just too damn big to build and maintain a cost efficient national railroad.

It would be badass to have high speed rail here if they could do it right. Maybe in the median area between the interstates.

Unless it's from New York to DC, Boston, Philly, etc it doesn't really make sense.

That doesn't include the roadbed. That number is ridiculously low for new construction.
The CA debacle works out to around $200M per mile. Which is insane.

I hear this a lot on Facebook. Is this really a need for America?
We just aren't laid out like European cities, unless it's just in the northeast quadrant

Seriously man, if the answer to this question isn't instantly obvious to you I don't know how to help.

Elon will build a hyperloop instead.

making it happen isn't the issue. it's making it profitable.

And just look at that high speed train project in Cali - what an utter debacle.

We live in the 21st century, not the 19th.

Passenger rail is government subsidized worldwide.
We have Brightline in FL and it is private.

It's been reported in the past that the Acela Express from NYC to DC is the only leg of Amtrak that breaks even. And it costs about the same as flying.
A limited-stop route like that is probably the closest we'll ever get to high speed rail in America.
