The foul play angle doesn’t make any sense. The government would have just detained and then deported him if he was really a problem. It’s wasn’t like he was going to blow the lid off something.
The people there fly from Saudi Arabia and other parts of the Arab world. Don’t assume his death would have to be at the behest of govt actors

quote:Bronchitis does suck. I just had it. But it usually resolves itself on its own, usually a result of a viral infection, but antibiotics might work if it doesn’t (bacterial). Regardless it’s usually much less problematic than something like pneumonia. Like 500 people die from bronchitis per year (0.2 per 100,000 cases), and those seem to be all from chronic bronchitis, and I can’t even find any data on mortality for acute bronchitis.
I had a case of bronchitis in may 2017 that nearly made me want to jump in front of a train. Way worse than the 3x i had covid I always gave grant a hard time and he made it easy sometimes but you hate to hear this news. Hopefully nothing sinister involved. He did a lot of good stuff for the game here.

This is a crazy story.
Wahl is probably the bigger name in US soccer journalism who isn’t a former player. He is also one of the most vocal critics of the World Cup who stayed in Qatar throughout the entire tournament.
Anyone who is remotely familiar with the Streisand Effect would think it’s best to leave Wahl alone. The treatment of migrant labor has faded to the background as the games began.
Despite the November start, the games have been very good. All of the big names have played well (besides Ronaldo for now), there have been fun upsets, mostly the top teams advancing, and pretty limited in-game controversies.
Qatar could claim a pretty solid win next weekend.
Wahl’s death (and the shadow of suspicion after Jamal Khashoggi’s murder) will cast this World Cup in a very different light in the US.

Lol no it won’t
99% of this country doesn’t even know who Grant Wahl is.
This isn’t even a blip on the radar of this World Cup.

Meh, he was one of the most-known SI writers in the early 2000's.
He was the one who wrote the Lebron high school cover story which was one of the most read SI stories of all-time.

I hate to say it, but man, if you are going to be in a hard core place like Qatar you can’t do stuff like wear a rainbow shirt, etc. Those people don’t play and they don’t have laws to keep you safe.
You have to know better.
You have to know better.

This is really strange and unfortunate
I hope we'll find out more information but given the lead up, seems super sketchy
Would be super interesting if the US brought back all of their journalists as precaution

Yet a journalist was hacked to death in a Turkish embassy bc he wrote bad things about MBS.

Not only do most Americans know Grant Wahl, they have no idea about the assassination of Jamal Khashoggi. Now that Biden has squashed his family from going after MBS, that story will be buried and unfindable in 6 months.

Of course he isn’t a big name to the general public.
But in death, he will become much more famous than ever before.
It’s already getting picked up by the mainstream US press and tabloids such as the NY Post and TMZ.
The suspicious nature of the death will be used by both the left (who like him for his pro-LGBT views) and the right (who generally don’t know him but aren’t exactly looking to write puff pieces about Qatar) and it will be a conspiracy theory used by different groups.

Conspiracy theories over the past decade or so have turned out to be true. Don’t dismiss this event with that label.

How many people knew who Jamal Khashoggi was the day before he died?
How many people know who he is now?
It’s magnitudes higher.

Its on the front page of ESPN now. If people didn't know who he was, they'll probably at least hear about it now.

Right, I’m not dismissing any claims. Everything seems plausible for now.
The results of his autopsy and any potential
toxicology report, if performed by US doctors, will be huge.

He was insufferable during COVID. A Karen of the most obnoxious order
By now he's likely had at least 10 boosters, possibly 15

A lot more
How many people care?
Honestly, no one gives a frick unless they’re trying to virtue signal or shout orange man bad.
I’m sorry, I know how much Wahl meant to US Soccer, I’ve followed him for years and at one point in the past he was THE man. But this isn’t going to be the big thing like people think it will be
