Not a Gregg fan, but this is some serious bullshite. The biggest problem with cancel culture is its unwillingness to forgive those people who have genuinely undergone the effort to change themselves for the better.
Don't think it has anything to do with forgiveness, rather just a disgruntled fan who has dirt trying to get Gregg out.
The question is, who the frick knew about Gregg kicking his wife/then-girlfriend 31 years ago?

Yeah this is shite. It was 32 years ago for christs sake. Only Tim Ream was alive then

I think I lean more to it not being a fan and someone who just wants to harm/embarrass US Men’s soccer. If a disgruntled fan wanted Gregg out wouldn’t they have tried this stunt before the World Cup?

USSF will be under massive pressure to cut ties with him once the inevitable flood of cancel shitposts come out in the next few days. I am mostly speaking to the fact that this should never even be a thing in the first place. Without a culture willing to crucify someone over this without considering the details, the blackmail wouldn't have ever happened.

What sucks though is now they could keep him under the guise of not bowing to the cancel mob.
Is that kind of play beyond Gregg's tactical capacity?

I don't think the USSF would ever face off with the cancel mob. If anything, it would be the opposite.

I wanted Gregg fired for performance the day he was hired but if it’s genuinely the single instance of kicking mentioned in his statement when he was 18 I can’t even pretend this makes me want him fired more. It only makes me sympathize with him
Hopefully his fate is already sealed and nothing changes either direction. It would be bullshite to fire him for it and it would be bullshite to give him cover from being fired

How many people in the world knew about this before today? It must be under 100 or so.
No public record, no online rumors, no issues that have been rumored in the past by even the most wild speculators online.
It makes me wonder if it has anything to do with the whole Gio mess. And if it does, that could make the Sampson/Harkes/Wynalda thing look clean.

It happened during the same time period as the Gio mess...

By that you mean Claudio?
If so, that would be a hell of a way to torpedo your USMNT legendary status.
It is odd though. It had to be someone that knew Gregg, or someone with 2nd hand info, because the police weren't even involved in the incident so there is no report or anything.

Also, kind of buried in US Soccer's statement is that apparently, there were other coaching staff members that were blackmail targets as well.

It gets juicier. Gregg's wife and Danielle Egen, Claudio's wife, were college roommates.

Soccer would be so much more popular here if the general public knew about all the drama that goes on
They'd be eating it up like they do the NBA stuff that seems to always be happening

Yeah, it has to be someone who a) knew about something that none of the media, pundits, or rumor mill guys who run unsubstantiated gossip knew about and b) had a sudden incentive to leak that stuff years into Berhalter’s tenure.
There are probably at most handful of people (cue up the David Cross gif from Arrested Development) who would fit into that category.

I don't think the Reyna's did it, although they would be the strongest suspects for any detective.
Just seems like an insanely stupid thing to do.
Like, yeah, Gio if he was healthy, should've played more, but it's not like he was ostracized from the team completely. He got called in to every single camp he was available for post-COVID. I can't see how lifelong family friends would resort to felony blackmail because of playing time.
Hell, Claudio didn't play at all in his first World Cup with the USMNT.

It would help to know what the blackmailer was asking for in return. If they wanted Gio to play, then it seems pretty obvious who it was or who was connected.
Is this US Soccer letting whoever it was know that they know who it was?

Sounds like they wanted the coaching staff to step down.

I don’t know why he even felt the need to put all that out there.
