Do high school students in the USA need an AP African American Studies course? Will there be a Mexican American Studies course? A Pilipino American Studies course?

Seems like more woke BS and a poor use of time and resources to me

quote:

In June 2020, after the killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd galvanized racial injustice protests globally, Brooklyn Preparatory High School organized a forum for its staff and the predominantly Black and Hispanic student body to share their thoughts and express their feelings.

quote:

With the help of their assistant principal and the backing of the AP for All initiative of the New York City Department of Education, students and staff launched a petition calling for African American Studies to be among the College Board's Advanced Placement offerings. After a two-year push, the school is now among 60 across the country participating in a pilot program launched this fall for AP African American Studies — at a time when teaching about race is under assault across the United States.

quote:

"A lot of our history classes, we learn about white history like Europeans, like colonization, and a lot of things like that," said Riddick, a senior who hopes to study journalism at Northwestern University. "And I feel like us being mostly Hispanic, mostly African American students, mostly Caribbean students, we don't get to learn a lot about our cultures and the ways that we were thriving. We learn more about the ways that we were confined like in slavery, and just how we were treated."

During a recent class, Brooklyn Prep Assistant Principal Shannah Henderson, who teaches the course, had students work in small groups to analyze the poem "Heritage" by Countee Cullen. She said her role is primarily to remind the students "about the different perspectives, and the different voices" and to manage the different cultural expectations of the children, in keeping with the course design.

A course on why you can’t get ahead in life. Theyre being used as pawns but starting to wake up

Growing up being a minority white in public schools, I have a PhD in African American studies already.

Not recommended.

I took that course in school. Well, my high school was 70% black, I feel like that qualifies in and of itself.

It was back in the 80s when a Shreveport local TV station had a HS game show copied after the college bowl show on CBS.

The local schools were Booker T. Washington vs. First Baptist (they no longer have a HS). All black school vs. tiny all white school.

It was a prelim round so neither team had beaten anyone.
Bonus question for Booker T. Washington:
'Who founded Tuskegee Institute?'
Some discussion while clock ticking and then: 'We don't know.'

Moderator: 'First Baptist???'
Them: 'It was Booker T. Washington.'

First Baptist won by something like 200-50. They cancelled all prelim rounds after that live show so that this embarrassment wouldn't happen again.

African American Studies course

Is this the course where we teach kids how to blame other groups for their problems instead of teaching skills for success?

Well, if this prepares them to return to their homelands where they'll be welcomed with open arms, why not?

Not if they call themselves citizens of the U.S.A.

Having read a number of books by Africans about living in Africa, I doubt that these young scholars have the self control to even learn how to read the names of the authors Dambudzo Marechera, Wole soyinka, among others, much less write papers on them (AND) spell the names correctly much less keep the tribes straight.
