Dozens of Democrats in the House and Senate proposed legislation this week that would give all students from pre-school through high school three free meals a day plus a snack regardless of income, a move they said is needed to cope with the "record numbers" of American kids who are struggling with hunger.

quote:

"It is an international embarrassment that today, in the richest country in the history of the world, we are seeing record numbers of children and youth struggling with hunger on a daily basis," said Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., the sponsor of the Senate legislation.

quote:

The bill makes no mention of how the program would be funded or what it would cost. Many bills include language saying that Congress will appropriate whatever money is needed to fund a new program, or that funding will come from spending offsets or higher taxes.

i work and i eat 3 meals a day

i did not work, i did not have money to eat

once i figured out if i worked, i ate, it all came together

although it would have been nice to watch springer and maury in original episode runs instead of catching the reruns on the pluto tv app.

Why do people confuse “in debt” and “rich”?

Students. So, dropouts and drug dealers aren't eligible?

My kid is grown up but given the choice between school lunch and Peanut butter and jelly sandwich she always chose the latter.

I see another huge waste of money coming here and somebody profiting. Somebody who kicks back to fund certain politicians.

American kids these days are fatter than any other time in American history and some of the fattest in the world. They need less to eat and more exercise. If going to do anything, should be a national exercise program not food program

Let’s not. The federal government’s program in our school district has high schoolers being fed the same portions as kindergartners. They literally count tater tots and have to account for anything dropped on the ground. It’s a Trojan horse to suck more tax dollars out of the people. How about the people feed their kids with all that WIC and EBT money they’re getting?

Something tells me that I won’t qualify and will still be footing the bill to feed my three kids…. The reward for being successful in this country is slipping further and further

They eat 2/3 bags of chips a day and 1/2 drinks. They spend $10 a day on snacks. They also walk around with $900 ENT cards and iPhone 15 maxes. They already get breakfast and lunch. They also get feed all summer. My word.

I already paid for 3 meals a day for my own kids for over two decades. And I already pay for ghetto Shaneekwa and trailer Carla's SNAP card, so hard pass.

And speaking of SNAP, when is someone with a functional brain going to finally limit SNAP purchases to healthy staples and prohibit purchases of gallons of Dr. Pepper and pallets of Crunch Berry and Little Debbie?

The same people who want to fully control what public school cafeterias can serve to kids, also advocate for the parents of these kids to spend their food stamp money on nothing but carbs and sugar.
