OP (7/12/23):

They've agreed to federal mediation between themselves and the studios for today, but they refuse to extend the deadline. If talks prove unfruitful then the actors will hit the picket line at 12:01 AM on the 13th.

With the writers and the actors on strike, the American motion picture and television industries will effectively be shutdown for the foreseeable future.

UPDATE (7/13/23):

SAG-AFTRA has decided to strike after failing to come to terms with the studios. They hit the picket lines tonight at midnight:

Deadline

Hollywood is completely shut down for the first time since 1960. Ironically enough, the President of SAG-AFTRA at that time was none other than Ronald Reagan.

Ohhh nooo.. This is tragic.

If you have HBO, Showtime, etc... you would think writers and actors have been on strike for decades. Same old shite playing over and over and over and over...

Like it or not, a lot of the Hollywood and recorded entertainment as a whole has been making art for themselves, not the common person. The unfortunate effect of this is the common person couldn't give a shite about a strike.

What? We live in the era of fan service and comic book movies. They exclusively cater to the common person

Also I can’t believe I have to explain this again but actors are not the ones who green light movies or determine the direction of the industry. That’s the people they are striking against. You’re rooting against your own interest here if you’re doing the whole “good!” Routine about this.

That's because there is a 6-12 month lag on those things. Next summer will be where the strike is noticed.

This is a bold strategy from Hollywood. And I'm throwing actors, writers, production companies, studios, etc. into "Hollywood."

One thing Covid should have taught them is that people ultimately don't need the movie-going experience, which is where Hollywood makes a large chunk of their money. So doing anything to jeopardize that is stupid.

Not to mention the whole AI angle that is quickly approaching.

The actors and writer's union are trying to get a bigger slice of this changing industry, and I don't know of anyone who thinks this will work for them. It's grasping at straws in an industry facing tighter margins and huge losses.

You misunderstand me. I’m not watching anything made in the last 5 years let alone 6-12 months. Call me when they yank season 4 of game of thrones off the servers. I have plenty of content (much of it new to me) to last me for I’d bet a decade or more.

No, they are taking properties that have prior followings and ramming shitty things they want to do in them (Star Wars, Lightyear, Indiana Jones, ect ect ect) instead of keeping with the themes. Tiny Easter eggs are fan service, but don't replace changing entire themes.

Actors have plenty of liberties with films, and have been taking credit for creative directions. Also I don't remember saying anything about my personal viewpoints, just that there is a ton of animosity at Hollywood as a whole.
