Great visuals, cinematography, acting etc yada yada yada

But the storytelling, pacing, and where they decided to end it was extremely boring and, frankly, kinda dumb.

TLDR version; Growing family moved to planet so they can be murdered and the son survives.

All of what happened in the first Dune usually happened in the first scene of most similar 1980’s movies

Brilliant movie, not one wasted line and great characters all around. World building, effects and cinematography at its absolute best.

The second one was worse. It's also a very tired story.

That would be a very confusing, exposition-heavy scene.

It wasn’t Star Wars or The 5th Element, but its own thing.

Unfortunately George Carlin (RIP) wasn’t available any longer…

I think the 2 currently out are boring. I cannot understand why people are claiming they are great. Characters suck. Stories suck. Story is hard to follow. It’s boring and doesn’t make sense.

I don't get how people can't follow the story in either of the movies. I never read the books. I watched the original Dune like 20-30 years ago. It wasn't an issue for me (or anyone I saw it with).

Too complicated for people who prefer Transformers type movies.

Same here. It takes itself soooooo seriously that it becomes comical. You can tell they really tried with this one, but it's just stale. It has no soul or balls. I haven't even bothered with the second one.

And yes, pretentious homos, I fully understand it.

If you're talking about the current version (not the old one from the 80's):

I kinda agree.

It's a great visualization of a good story, but you need to know what's going on to really "get it". If you read the book, or if you saw the older movie, you know what's going on and it works. If you come in cold, it can be vague and confusing.

Oh great. Here we go with “The movie that everyone thinks is so great isn’t that great” threads for Villaneuve’s Dune.

Both films are fricking great. My boyfriend hates sci-fi but he loves these two movies.

I’ve never read the books or watched the original film, but I have no problem following this version. Frankly, Villaneuve has nailed it. His version is what the film version should be.

If you can’t follow this version of Dune, you might want to stick with movies that are a little more simple.

Why was security lax regarding the doctor? Surely someone with access to the inner circle of the Atreides would have security watching their every move...

What was the significance of Thufir Hawat, and for that matter Piter de Vries?

These are essential to the story, and are completely untouched in the new version.

For that matter, they show lasers cutting through things like butter. Why aren't lasers used more frequently, and instead you see a lot of bladed combat?
This also is left out.

Don't look the answers up, give me your answers and reasoning.

Heck, I will add this: why is spice so essential to this civilization, that major factions will go to war to control it? Do you think it's a drug, and the culture is so decadent that everyone wants to trip out.... or is there more to it?
