12 Gauge Buckshot vs Defense Loads?

Is there any difference between the two? The 00 buckshot has 9 pellets and the defense load has 8 pellets.

The velocity and recoil. Defense buckshot has dramatically less recoil than full power loads. It's actually pleasant to shoot.

Thanks for that info. Less recoil would be better for my bum shoulder. Now I need to find some in stock at either BassPro or Acadamy.

At 7 yards (combat range per the experts) a dove/clay load will pretty much be a slug when it enters a body cavity. Home defense prep is easy, except for the aftermath.

I probably wouldn't deer hunt with it but it's pretty cool. The recoil is at most like a high brass fine shot shell.

I don’t have a source, but I’ve read that you can get a flyer with 9 shot loads vs the 8. For a defensive load you would prefer the tighter 8 shot pattern over that extra BB going off into the unknown.

That's a thing I havent seen before but read about alot. I havent noticed the 8 pellets pattern any better.
Mainly, the recoil from full power loads is brutal. The extra power isn't needed since 1350fps plated buckshot at close range will penetrate a mile.

Both make a hole in the bad guys. Defense load is less taxing on the shooter.

I ordered some Hornady Critical Defense shells from BassPro. This shotgun is for home defense only.

That's what I use. The ones with the flight control was. I usually buy #1 buck instead of 00 buck, but whatever.

From the 10 foot distance, most of the pellets penetrated about 4 ¾ inches. It’s an inexact science to measure precisely since the range of penetration of individual pellets was between three and seven inches. The wad penetrated about 1 ¼ inches.
From 15 feet, the bulk of the pellets penetrated about 4 inches with a range of two to six inches overall. The wad penetrated about 1 ¼ inches – about the same as the 10 foot gelatin block.
Once the pellets encounter continuous resistance, they start slowing down quickly. The four inch penetration depth was a bit of a surprise after seeing what the birdshot did to fairly tough plywood, but that’s why we’re testing this whole theory.

I have 2 home defense shotguns, both short barreled, long magazine pumps. The only round I’ve ever used in them is #4 buckshot, fortunately I’ve never had to fire them in anger…

Was at Academy the other day and was surprised at how much 00 they had. I grabbed 2 boxes of cheap stuff. I figured I would have to just buy like packs of 5, but these were full boxes of 25 Monarch 00 for like $14.
I honestly had given up a year or two ago trying to find anything bigger then 4's. I should probably go ahead and start buying what I need now that stock is getting better.

This is simply not true. Bird shot is still individual pellets, each with their own momentum (which is very little momentum considering the pellets mass). They do not act as one single mass, because there is nothing bonding them together. If there was, then it would be a slug and not bird shot. On another note, I don't think you can find one single incident where buckshot was used in a home defense situation and penetrated through someone, through an exterior wall, through another exterior wall and killed the the neighbor. Quit believing everything you hear. Buckshot is a fine home defense round. That's why cops have carried it for years.

I served on a jury for a murder trial some years back. Ol boy saw a man going into the house he and girl friend once shared. He kept driving and went to his dad’s house and got a shotgun from dad’s truck. It had birdshot in it. He then returned and shot Jody in the shoulder. Jody ran out into the yard and was shot at close range. The wadding was in his shin when it was all over and Jody bled out. That was some nasty photographic evidence to look at.
